You May Be Suffering From A Stress Response Illness Part 5 of 5 - Serotonin

Serotonin is important for awareness and alertness.  But over time the excess Serotonin can have a detrimental effect.  It is associated with stress response, hyper vigilance, hyper alertness, hyper awareness, fear and anxiety.   Before taking an SSRI do your research.  High blood pressure, blood clotting, fibroids, muscle breakdown, hypo thyroidism, pro-aging, degeneration are a few of the problems resulting from excessive Serotonin.  Long term use of Serotonin can result in the calcification of tissue, thickening of blood vessels, thickening of glands all of which can have a negative effect on organ performance and health.  See the works of Hans Selye.

Older people have higher levels of Cortisol than younger ones over time.  Cortisol is another stress hormone.  Like Cortisol, levels of Serotonin also increase as we get older especially in the brain.  Not only is Serotonin associated with causing breakdown but breakdowns can lead to Serotonin increases.  Anything that causes breakdown will lead to increases in Serotonin levels.  The proverbial "Vicious Circle".  Exposure to Cortisol increases will dumb down the Serotonin response, cells will stop listening to Serotonin as a result more Serotonin will be produced, the so called Serotonin Resistance Syndrome.  The message is, you want to eliminate anything that is putting stress on the Serotonin System including SSRI drugs.

Serotonin has a fascinating relationship to Sunlight.  Serotonin was first created in bacteria, algae and plankton.    These fundamental life forms were dependent on the Sunlight for their existence.  Over time Serotonin became an important component of plant and animal cells.  The relationship of Serotonin to Sunlight was always maintained.  Like cholesterol which is activated by light to form building substances, Serotonin uses solar energy.  Even DNA responds to solar energy.  The fear of being out in the Sun is biochemically ignorant and not founded on fact.  Light absorbing chemicals play a major role in our health.  Serotonin is just such a chemical as is its main building block protein, Tryptophan just like Cholesterol is required for the manufacture of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a type of Cholesterol.  Serotonin is a type of Tryptophan.  One of the best ways to naturally support the Serotonin System is to make sure that you are getting enough Tryptophan and to supplement with 5 HTP.  Serotonin is a type of 5 HTP.  You can buy it at a health food store.  This is perhaps one way to avoid taking a poisonous pharmaceutical drug while supporting the body's natural processes.  5 HTP is non-toxic.  Where as Serotonin will not cross the Blood / Brain Barrier 5 HTP will.  Proteins, Amino Acids, Tryptophan and 5 HTP can be used to build Serotonin.  This is why Protein is so important for brain health.  See Dr. Eric Braverman's work especially, "The Edge Effect".

Tryptophan is stored in the skin.  It can absorb Sunlight Ultraviolet Light.  It can protect the skin from Sun burn, skin Cancer and the aging affects of the Sun.  It also protect the skin from dark spots called hyperpigmentation.  This may come from the Sun or from Cortisol or Estrogen.  The technical term is Malasma.  One of the best ways to protect your skin from Malasma is to take 5 HTP or Tryptophan containing foods.  Tryptophan also protects the skin from wrinkles.  It was found that pre.dosing cells with Tryptophan protected them from Ultraviolet radiation.  Tryptophan has also been found to reduce the formation of Cataracts.  These study results can be found in the following references: The Journal of "Photochemistry and Photobiology", January, 2008 and the "Journal Opthalmalogica", March, 2003.

Tryptophan a biochemical similar to Serotonin is important for the protection of the eyes, the skin, the DNA, the Brain, It is an essential Amino Acid which means it must be part of your diet.  Tryptophan absorbs and emits light.
