Why I Prefer A Heart Attack

The following is based on a recent presentation by Dr. Jenifer Daniels.  The information is based on statistical information available from American sources.  In no way do I diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.  This is for information only and does not give medical advice.  I suggest you consult with your qualified medical practioner if you have any medical symptom.

Many blood pressure medicines actually increase the risk of heart attack by 20%.  Lipitor, a popular cholesterol lowering drug increases the chance of stroke to 12%.  You had better understand these numbers and options before you make any decision about your health.  What you don’t know can kill you.  Now I am going to disclose information that most people do not realize but should.

If you actually have a heart attack your risk of dying is between 5% and 8%.  That means you have between 92% to 98% chance of surviving the attack.  Many of the drugs prescribed to prevent heart attack actually do more harm than good.   Research the facts for yourself.

What happens when you have a heart attack?  If you make it to the hospital alive you will be given a medicine like Activase which is a powerful blood thinning drug.  It opens up the Pulmonary Arteries, restores circulation and saves your life.  The problem is that Activase is implicated in stroke for .9% of the people who receive it.  So now there is an increase in stroke risk along with the heart attack you are dealing with.  You can avoid heart attack by simply using 200 micrograms of folic acid per day.  Supplementing with the proper nutrients such as Magnesium, Zinc, Niacin, Nitric Oxide, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, CoQ10, cod liver oil, deep breathing and drinking water will lesson the chances of heart attack significantly..

Another important question is whether or not you should go to the hospital after having a heart attack?  Duh, yes.  But even going to the ER is not without risk.  You need to know what that risks are.  The risk of death from an acute Myocardial Infraction is about 5.8% in cases where the arrival to the  hospital is delayed by 2 hours.  A timely arrival to the hospital actually increases the death rate statistically.  The survival rate is improved by delaying the arrival by two or more hours.  We can make no conclusions from this.  But this is a statistical fact.  The point is that there is some degree of risk in all actions.  There is no reason to assume that there is no risk in going to the hospital and  taking the therapy in the case of a heart attack..

Once you get to the hospital if you qualify and elect to have Pulmonary Bi-pass Surgery you have just increased your death rate by an additional 1.8% to 18%.  That increase has to be added to the 5.8% death rate.   This means that just by getting to the hospital early and accepting the Pulmonary Bi-pass Surgery with a competent surgeon the chance of death is now raised to at least 7.6%.

Added to the 7.6 is another increase in mortality just by staying overnight.  That increases the rate by another 1%.  (In America MRSA / VRE infections kill about 100,000 people per year.  Competent doctors kill 107,000 people per year just by following official protocol.  Incompetent doctors only kill 92,000 people per year.  Being in bed and not being properly turned kills 25,000 people per year.  All in all about 325,000 people per year die from a hospital stay.  If you divide that by the number of hospital stays you get about a 1% increase in mortality rate just from an overnight hospital stay.).  The risk from dying of a heart attack goes from 3.6% to 8.6% just because you did all the “right” things following a heart attack

But what is heart disease any way?  You think you know?  According to the National Center for Vital Statistics published in 2012, There were 777,548 deaths in America per year from heart disease.   There were actually only 121,000 or 5% deaths from acute myocardial infarction.  So why the larger number?

A lot of events are reported as cardiovascular disease related deaths which really are not.  For example, the following events were reported as heart attack deaths when in fact they were something else:

Stroke.............................129,000
Aneurisms......................... tbd
Other forms of heart disease...........................…118,000
Heart failure (the heart muscle becomes weak).............................…118,000
Chronic Eschemic Heart Disease (not enough oxygen to the heart.  These are patients under the care of a competent doctor receiving the Maximum Medical Therapy after years of care.)....................252,237

NNT is one of the ways that researchers and doctors calculate the effectiveness of a drug or treatment.  It stands for Number Needed to Treat.  It answers the question, “How long does a patient have to use this particular drug or treatment before they experience benefit.  “Benefit” being in this case avoiding a heart attack.   This is calculated by using a group of people who have a known condition and extrapolating their experience.

In the book, “Know Your Chances” published in 2008 by the University of California Press written by Dr. Steven Wilson it is asked the question “what are we preventing?”.   His conclusion was that if you are walking, talking and have no symptoms it does not make sense to use any preventative medical therapy ie. drugs.

The American Journal of Hyprtension an advocate for hypertensive intervention in their published document, “Cost Minimazation Study and the Number Needed to Treat Uncomplicated Hypertension” they determined that there  needed to be 1,950 middle aged (40 - 60 year olds) people taking heart medication every day for 1 year in order to prevent one heart attack.  Put another way one person would have to take medical therapy for 1,950 years to prevent one fatal or non-fatal heart attack!

To avoid one non-fatal heart attack an elderly person of 75 years old would have to take blood pressure medication for 350 years in order to see any benefit.  This means that if you are an elderly person of 75 years old blood pressure medication may not be realistic for you.

In the case of stroke which contemplates a panoply of daily medicines including: blood pressure drugs,  cholesterol reducing drugs and blood thinning drugs the NNT is 665 years to prevent one fatal or non-fatal stroke.

In general, it would take 1,355 years to experience one life saving medical event from any cause.  To avoid one non-fatal medical event you would have to take blood pressure medicine daily for 430 years to experience a benefit.   I think I would accept having a heart attack at year 429 rather than taking the medicine.  How about you?  Think about it.

One very popular therapy to prevent heart attacks is aspirin.  It is touted in the media and in fact my doctor prescribed it for me.  The NNT for aspirin is 1,667.  In other words a person would have to take aspirin daily for 1,667 years to prevent one heart attack event.  Or if a group, 1,667 people in the group would have to take aspirin daily for one year just so that one person could have one benefit.  Meaning to avoid one heart attack.

The NNH (Number Needed to Harm) for aspirin is based on a study from Italy of 186,000 patients.  2,300 patients had gastro-intestinal bleeding from the aspirin.  1,300 had brain bleeds from the aspirin.  A total of 3,600 people who were harmed out of 186,000 people in the study.  The NNH (Number Needed to Harm) for aspirin is 51.6 years. Or put another way it takes one person taking aspirin daily for one year to be harmed and 1,667 years to see any benefit.

How can you get the benefit without the harm?  Impossible you say?  Now you know the importance of natural supplementation.  They allow you to get all the benefits with none of the side effects.

Garlic for instance thins the blood with none of the side effects.  If you used the products we sell at The Naturopathic Healer you can address a broad range of symptoms without any side effects.

What this means is there is a slight increase in the risk of dying from a heart attack than if you slipped on a carpet and fell.  The rate of death from all accidents including car accidents is 115,000 per year as compared to deaths from acute myocardiac infarction (heart attacks) is 121,000.

I think its time for  a joke from Dr. Jenifer Daniels to lighten this article:

The doctor says to the patient “That blood pressure is way too high we have to get it down.  I am going to prescribe the medicine called “Never Works”.

The Patient comes for a follow up appointment and the doctor says we need to prescribe another medication.  I am going to prescribe something called, “Profit More”.

The patient comes to another appointment and the doctor says, that pressure is still too high.  I am going to prescribe the new medicine called “Kill Them All”.

The Patient says, “Gee doctor, that’s a lot of medication.  Can we get rid of “Never Works” and “Profit More” and just take “Kills Them All”?

Dr. Daniels says that it is not to far from the truth.  The first medicines usually never work.  Then you are prescribed something more expensive but still does not work and then you are prescribed something that is known to be deadly.  Think about it.

Let’s get back to work.

Cholesterol - If you have high cholesterol you are at increase risk of a heart attack.  Does addressing the high cholesterol with medication make a difference?   Cholesterol lowering medications have an NNT of 1,250.  That means one person needs to take the medication daily for 1,250 years in order to prevent one heart attack.  But when you take into account that there is only a 5% to 8% chance of dying from a heart attack you have to wonder if its worth the risk.

The NNH for Cholesterol medication is 3.  “Harm” means deadly side effects.  In other words.  One person has to take Cholesterol lowering medications for 3 years before they experience harm.

Here are some of the things you can do without taking dangerous drugs that have all benefit and no harm:
