Compounds found in black tea can neutralize bioterrorism microorganisms (NaturalNews) Could the natural compounds found in black tea be powerful enough to successfully counter the deadly effects of a biological terrorist attack? New research out of the U.K. seems to suggest so, having found that a specific compound abundant in tea effectively deactivates and neutralizes ricin, a highly-toxic chemical byproduct of castor beans that is often used in attempted acts of biological terrorism.

Fish oil saves life of boy with brain injury
(NaturalNews) In March 2010, high school student Bobby Ghassemi was taken out of his crashed vehicle and airlifted to a nearby Virginia hospital more dead than alive with severe brain trauma. He was so much more dead than alive that the physician who eventually advised the Ghassemi family on using fish oil, Dr. Michael Lewis said, "For all intents and purposes, he was dead on the scene. I'm looking at the reports, and they report a Glasgow Coma Score of three. A brick or piece of wood has a Glascow Coma Score of three. It's dead."

Mushroom found on birch tree holds promise as a potent anti-cancer tonic (NaturalNews) A little known mushroom is establishing a solid reputation in medical circles as a powerful defense against cancer. Although relatively unheard of in mainstream media, the chaga mushroom has been used in folk medicine for generations. Research has shown chaga to be extremely effective in protecting cellular DNA from damaging free radicals. It also has anti-tumor and immune stimulating benefits.

Bentonite clay to remove toxic heavy metals, clear diaper rashes, stop stinky feet and more (NaturalNews) Bentonite clay has a very strong negative ionic charge. This negative ionic charge attracts things that have a positive charge, such as heavy metals, toxins, harmful bacteria, pesticides, and other pathogens. By divine design, bentonite clay does not attach to anything beneficial in the body. The clumping action of clay binds to heavy metals and pathogens to prevent them from passing through the intestines to the bloodstream. The clay binds with these toxins and then makes an exit via the colon and the kidneys. >>TPH Item of Interest: TLC Dry Powder Clay

Shock discovery: Bacteria found in public water comes from the treatment filters, not from the water source (NaturalNews) When you think of contaminants in water, if you believed they simply came from the source, you'd be mistaken; new data from researchers at the University of Michigan shows that most bacteria found in drinking water actually comes from the filters of water treatment plants. The study, unique in its own right, took a broad look at the water supply in Ann Arbor, from source to tap. What researchers found is that most of the bacteria in water coming out of the tap did not come from the aquifers or rivers where it originated, but from filters at treatment plants designed to remove such bacteria.

Confirmed: India's Polio Eradication Campaign in 2011 Caused 47,500 Cases of Vaccine-Induced Polio Paralysis  If you listen to mainstream media news, you'll be told that polio has now been eradicated in India - an accomplishment the Polio Global Eradication Initiative (PGEI), founded in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are attributing to the intense polio vaccination campaign.

Aluminum adjuvant linked to Gulf War illness induces motor neuron death in mice.  Gulf War illness (GWI) affects a significant percentage of veterans of the 1991 conflict, but its origin remains unknown. Associated with some cases of GWI are increased incidences of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neurological disorders. Whereas many environmental factors have been linked to GWI, the role of the anthrax vaccine has come under increasing scrutiny.

Cholesterol Is Good For You - Part 1

Please note that this post is based on a recent radio broadcast from Naturopathic Pharmacist Ben Fuchs.  You can listen to him week days at www.brightsideben.com on Genesis Communications Network.  This post in no way is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or counsel you.  If you have a medical symptom you are advised to consult with your qualified medical practitoner.  This post is for your information and entertainment only.

Despite all the hype cholesterol is actually good for you.  Don't believe me?  Read on.  You are about to find out that what you thought you knew about cholesterol was actually false information.  Only you can answer for yourself how can so many people be so mistaken about something as important as cholesterol.  Cholesterol being bad for you is not science but in fact an ill founded myth.  People are having all sorts of medical procedures and medication designed to reduce cholesterol.  Even governments are contemplating putting cholesterol lowering drugs into the water supply in an attempt to reduce cardiovascular disease.  According to Naturopathic Pharmacist Ben Fuchs,"there is no relationship between cholesterol and heart disease, period."

But first let us find out what is cholesterol?  Where does it come from?  Who put it there?  How can you tell "bad" cholesterol from "good" cholesterol?  What about drugs that reduce cholesterol?  Did you know that two thirds of your cholesterol is made by your own body?  Did you know that 75% of the brain's white matter is made from cholesterol as are your nerve cells?

Every cell in the body uses cholesterol to make its membrane.   All the sex hormones such as Testosterone, Esterodiol, Esterone, Esterial, Progesterone, Pregnanalone, Cortisol and DHEA are made from cholesterol.  Statin drugs create inflammation of the liver that halt the production of cholesterol.

Cholesterol is transported through the body in the blood by lipoproteins.  The lipoproteins have been divided into five categories depending on the density of fat in them:  Most people are familiar with two of these known as HDL - High Density Lipoproteins and LDL - Low Density Lipoproteins.   The difference between the HDL and, LDL is the size of the molecule.  Cholesterol itself is harmless.  There are no diseases that are caused by high cholesterol.  There is no "bad" cholesterol or "good" cholesterol.  There are some diseases that will cause cholesterol to be increased.  But there are no diseases that come from cholesterol. HDL and LDL are different indications of how your body is handling oxidative stress and free radical damage.  These markers are used to assess how well the body is handling free radicals supposedly.

According to Dr. Peter Glidden, cholesterol is not the cause of atherosclerosis.  In fact, plaques are formed as the body responds to blood vessel damage.  Thinking that cholesterol causes blocked arteries is like saying that firemen cause fires.  The bigger the fire, the more firemen that respond.  Therefore, the more atherosclerosis there is the more cholesterol there is.  This is a backwards way of thinking and hardly scientific.

If cholesterol were a problem it would be a problem in the veins as well as the arteries.  But in realty plaques build up only in the arteries and never in the veins.

Cholesterol is a biochemical molecule.  It is critical for the proper functioning of the human body.  It is the ultimate biochemical raw material from which many other biochemicals are made.  It is necessary for
  • Healing,
  • Youth
  • Growth
  • Repair
  • "Feelng Good"
  • Anti-aging
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Creation of Sex Hormone
  • Creation of Vitamin D  (Vitamin D is an electrified version of cholesterol by virtue of a small change in the cholesterol molecule)
  • Cell membrane is 50% cholesterol (cholesterol has important electrical properties as well as provides structure to the cell membrane.  In the Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA,  it is stated that statln drugs are repeatedly associated with cancer in various studies in rodents.  It was not said that statin drugs caused cancer.)
  • There are thousands of fatty sub-structuctures inside the cells that have their own membrane also composed of cholesterol.
  • Mitochondria depend on cholesterol to maintain their electrical charge and to form their structure
  • Nerve cells throughout the body and brain also make cholesterol.  A cholesterol reducing medication or strategy not only stops the liver from making cholesterol but the nerve cells are also stopped from making cholesterol.  The effect of not making cholesterol is to turn a person into a vegetable who is incapable of thinking or moving.
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a number of illnesses including:
  • Inflammatory Diseases
  • Arthritis
  • Colitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Vitamin D may prevent macular degeneration
  • Vitamin D can help to lower blood pressure
  • Vitamin D is anti-cancer
  • Vitamin D supports the immune system
In other words, cholesterol deficiency can result in the same symptoms that Vitamin D deficiency results in.  Cholesterol deficiency can be associated with Macular Degeneration, Hypertension, Cancer and Immune problems.   Vitamin D is created by the interaction of the Sun with cholesterol.  We also get progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, pregnanalone and DHEA.

Cholesterol is necessary for skin health.  It helps the body capture and use sunlight.  Cholesterol acts like a solar battery.  Electrical changes take place as sunlight hits the cholesterol.   The energy from the sun is trapped in cholesterol based molecules.  Solar and ultraviolet energy is converted into chemical energy  via cholesterol.  It is then used in various biochemical processes in the body.

This sunlight / cholesterol connection is similar to the sunlight / Vitamin D process.  Vitamin D is a fundamental protection in the body.  Therefore, the cholesterol conversion into Vitamin D  is a critical health pathway.  However, Vitamin D must be in the correct form.  The best source of Vitamin D is the Sun.  Ultraviolet light charges the Vitamin D.   Vitamin D is the quintessential "growth and repair" molecule that is activated by the Sun.  This solar activation or sulfacion involves sulfur.

Not only is Vitamin D created by the Sun but it can also be found in food.  But it just happens to be that the same foods that are high in cholesterol are also high in Vitamin D.  Cholesterol is associated with 'vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Choline, Zinc, Iron and Phospholipids are also found in cholesterol bearing foods.  Therefore, if you deprive yourself of cholesterol containing foods like eggs, organ meats, rare cooked meat, shell fish, whole milk, cheese, butter and so on you will be depriving yourself of the other nutrients associated with cholesterol.

Nothing can age a person faster than going on a cholesterol lowering diet or a cholesterol free diet.  The impact of a cholesterol lowering diet would be the same as if you were suffering from fat malabsorption in which case you must keep the gallbladder in place, use apple cider vinegar in order to acidify the stomach, activate enzymes and absorb nutrition, use lecithin after meals to bolster fat absorption, using probiotics, using The Ultimate Enzymes from Youngevity.  And be sure to eat good fats.  Phamacist Ben Fuchs says that eating cholesterol can help your liver, heart and the rest of the body. He uses the Masai tribesman of East Africa as an example of a group of people who traditional consume cow products straight from the cow such as blood and raw milk and have no heart disease whatsoever.

The cholesterol complex is found in the skins of animals including fish and chicken.  It is cholesterol that allows the skin to act like a water barrier to prevent dryness from loss of moisture and repels water from the outside.  It also prevents the entrance of bacteria and viruses through the skin.  Cholesterol in certain forms can actually kill bacteria.  A lack of cholesterol in the skin is a sign of aging.  The skin also makes hormones such as estrogen and testosterone from cholesterol.

Cholesterol is an antioxidant.  It protects tissue from the burning effects of oxygen.  This is particularly helpful in the circulatory system which is especially vulnerable to oxidation.  Cholesterol in the circulatory system is a protective mechanism.  When cholesterol is increased in the blood system it is the body's attempt to protect itself.  When the body is forced to stop making cholesterol there is the loss of one of the most important protections against heart disease.

Now you are beginning to understand why and how cholesterol is good for you.  Be sure to read part 2 of this series for more critical information unavailable from the usual sources.

For a better understanding of how the body works we must understand how opposing hormones work.  The human body does not work in an absolute, black and white world.  Rather, the body works in balance of opposing forces.  These forces determine whether the body is in health or in sickness.

Let's review a few basics:

Cell Disease

According to Naturopathic Pharmacist Ben Fuchs, all disease is cell disease.  This means that we must consider the complex mechanism of the cell and its membrane if we truly want to address illness.  The implied question is "what is the environment of the cell that has caused it to malfunction?"

There are four ways that the cell breaks down:

  1. Suffication
  2. Toxification
  3. Starvation
  4. Dehydration
The "Triangle of Health"

There are the three critical points by which cells become diseased.  They are: the digestive / immune system, the sugar / insulin system and the adrenal / thyroid system.  A possible fourth point could be the lymphatic system.  When there is a breakdown of this intricate system we must find which part of the triangle of health is not functioning correctly and change the environment.

Entry Points of Disease

The human body functions quite well on its own as long as we give it what it needs and avoid the substances that make it sick.  However, in a constantly changing and artificial world this is becoming more difficult by the day.  There are three places of entry where triggers to disease can enter the body:
  • The digestive system meaning the intestines
  • The skin
  • The breathing system
By far the most likely entry point is the digestive tract by way of foods.

For this reason the first move in any corrective strategy is to eliminate digestive triggers.  One must identify and eliminate foods which cause GERD, Heart Burn, Cramping, Bloating, Gas, Burping, Diahrrea, Constipation, Celiac like symptoms, Crohns Disease like symptoms, Irritable Bowels Syndrome, etc.

Additionally, you must be able to absorb the fat soluble nutrients.  Therefore, it may be necessary to acidify the stomach.  We suggest organic apple cider vinegar and the use of digestive enzymes naturally with your doctor's consent.  HCL or bile might also be helpful.

To be healthy we must feed the body what it requires.  That would include the 90 essential vitamins and minerals plus Essential Fatty Acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6, great sources are fish oil such as cod liver oil or flax seed oil and protein with powdered protein from whey being the best.  These products are available from Youngevity and Kyani.

It is the hormones which regulate the bodily functions.  The hormones are a complex system of chemicals that keep the body operating at maximum efficiency all the time regardless of the changing environment.  However, when that system starts to malfunction serious consequences may result.  Insulin stimulates growth.  Glucagon slows it down.   Serratonin is a day time hormone.  Melatonin is a night time hormone.  Testosterone is a building hormone.  Cortisol is a breakdown hormone.  Estrogen is a contraceptive.  Progesterone is a pregnancy hormone.  These are all opposing hormones that work in perfect balance unless something disrupts that balance.

Estrogen increases the risk of autoimmune disease.  Estrogen adds an additional burden to the stress response system.  Progesterone relaxes the body.  Progesterone strengthens the immune system and is especially helpful with autoimmune diseases of the nerves such as Multiple Sclerosis.  Be sure to check with your doctor first.  By progesterone we are referring to true progesterone not progestine which is a synthesized pharmaceutical version.  (Women are twice as likely to suffer from MS as men possibly because of high levels of estrogen.)

One of the most interesting opposing relationships between estrogen and progesterone has to do with sex.  Estrogen shuts down sexuality.  Progesterone turns it on.  This Christmas season many people will unknowingly participate in a ancient ritual that uses progesterone.  Kissing under the mistletoe can affect the level of progesterone in the blood.  Mistletoe is known as a sexy plant.  The Celts for many centuries celebrated the Winter Solstice by celebrating the return of the Sun.  Not only did the Celts celebrate by drinking alcohol but sex was very much a part of the festivities.  Their honey wine and mead were laced with berries from mistletoe.

The ancient Greeks, Nordic tribesmen and other ancient people also used mistletoe berries to encourage fertility.  As it turns out the mistletoe plant is a powerful stimulant and activator of progesterone.  In many ways the mistletoe plant can act like progesterone.  Kissing under the mistletoe is a custom that goes back to ancient times that is based in fact.

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that feeds on oak trees.  But there is also a relationship between mistletoe and Cancer.  Mistletoe / progesterone relationship has been shown to support a defense against Cancer.  Where as estrogen is pro Cancer, progesterone is anti-cancer.  Scientist at the University of Adelide in Australia showed that extract of mistletoe was a highly effective alternative to chemotherapy as a treatment for Colon Cancer.  Mistletoe extract is already approved in Europe as an alternative treatment for Colon, Cancer.

Other plants that have also have progesterone stimulating properties, protects from Cancer and have fertility and libido benefits or to protect against excess estrogen such as blood root, mandrake, nutmeg, oregano, turmeric, thyme, red clover, cloves, fennel, licorice, chamomile and domiana.  These herbs can be used as spices to take advantage of their properties.

Estrogen reduces the strength of blood vessels.   It promotes the formation of thick blood and blood clots.  Progesterone restores blood vessel strength and helps to normalize blood clotting.  It helps keep blood flowing smoothly.  Estrogen stimulates contractions and spasms.  Progesterone has a relaxing effect.  Estrogen is pro anxiety.  Progesterone is anti-anxiety.  Estrogen reduces cell respiration and oxygenation.  Progesterone improves oxygenation.  Estrogen promotes cancers such as Endometriosis, Ovarian and Breast Cancer.

Adrenal Health

Adrenal health is critical in hormonal balance.  Rather than using hormonal replacement therapy it may be better to focus on Adrenal wellness.    Adrenal health is dependent on blood sugar issues and digestive wellness.   The underlying cause of what are thought to be menopausal issues are in fact manifestations of a stress response.  Insomnia, anxiety and hot flashes are signs of adrenal activation.

Adrenal hormones are made partially in the adrenal glands. Cholesterol is a "parent" raw material that is converted into lots of other things that the body needs.  Estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, pregnanolone, DHEA, cortisol and vitamin D are all made from cholesterol.      This means that if cholesterol is being diverted to make stress hormone instead of estrogen and progesterone you will not be able to produce the amount of youth growth and repair hormones needed to get through menopause.  As a result you are likely to be dealing with anxiety, hot flashes, loss of libido, accelerated skin aging, wrinkles, dryness of the skin and dark spots on the skin.  These are the very symptoms associated with menopause and aging.

Cortisol can be lowered by deep breathing, eliminating food allergens and intolerances, keeping the blood sugar stable and avoiding hypoglycemia.  You can also take excellent nutrients that specifically address the adrenal glands help them to make the sex hormones such as the B vitamins especially vitamin B 5 and B 12.  The B vitamins are known as the "anti-stess" vitamins.  B 5, Pantothenic Acid is very helpful for people suffering with excess skin oil as a stress response.  B 12 injections from your doctor can be particularly helpful.  Vitamin C is also very important as well as magnesium.   Youngevity's "Beyond Tangy Tangerine" is very helpful in adrenal health management.  Electrolytes are also important to be maintained.  Pharmacist Ben Fuchs recommends either Celtic Sea Salt or Hmalayan Crystal Salt.  He does not recommend "table salt".  The adrenal glands depend on salt and minerals.

Estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, pregnanolone, DHEA are hormones that are made in the ovaries.  As a woman reaches menopause the adrenal glands are suppose to take over.   The adrenal glands are a secondary source of these growth and reproductive hormones.  Many signs of aging are linked to the failure to produce sufficient amounts of these hormones in the adrenal glands.  The biggest reason why the adrenal glands are not sufficient in the making of these hormones is because cholesterol is being diverted by making cortisol the stress hormone.

The adrenal glands are part of the emergency response system of the body.  They help the body cope with emergencies.   All health issues can be improved by focusing on adrenal health.  All degenerative chronic diseases are linked to adrenal wellness.  The body's nature is to repair and heal.  But for some people the healing regenerative system is not working very well.  This defect implies that the normal healing and repairing is being blocked.

Chronic degenerative illnesses are by far the largest category of illness.  Amongst the complaints in this category of illnesses are skin issue, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, inflammatory conditions, etc.  In most cases you can blame activation of the adrenal emergency stress response system.  When the adrenal system is not doing its work, energy is being diverted from the chemical biology to the emergency biology.

Good health is the balance between opposing systems.  The two major opposing systems are the rest and digest system for thriving and the fight or flight emergency system which is the survival nervous system.  When healing is not taking place we must focus on "stressors".   Stressors may be psychological, mental or emotional stressors or physical stressors.  By physiological stressors we mean: the wrong kinds of foods in the wrong amounts at the wrong times, poor breathing techniques, malnutrition and accumulation of toxicity.

When two points of the Triangle of Health break down, the digestive system and the blood sugar system they will soon be followed by breakdown of the third point of the Triangle, the adrenal system.  If you are dealing with a chronic degenerative condition you must address the first two points of the Health Triangle, the digestive system and the blood sugar system.

When we do not eat properly the digestive system breaks down.  Leaks form in the gut.  Food, invaders, chemicals, toxins and poisons enter the blood, Intestinal bacterias become compromised.  Liver health begins to suffer.  Then there are problems processing sugar.  Once blood sugar becomes unstable, the high blood sugar / low blood sugar (hyperglycemic / hypoglycemic) roller coaster is triggered and the adrenal glands become involved.  The adrenal glands suffer.  While humans were evolving the only adrenal triggers were saber tooth tigers and other carnivores.  The adrenal glands did not have to deal with the stresses from fast food restaurants, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, GMO foods, soft drinks, pollution, prescription drugs, dysfunctional families, television, government regulations or the modern life styles.  These are all stresses that have come about in the last couple of hundred years.

In days gone by people did not have to worry about high blood sugar or elevated insulin.  These concerns are fairly recent developments.  Degenerative diseases are diseases of culture and civilization which is really nothing more than the domestication of mankind.  Only domesticated creatures like pets and humans have these diseases.  When the adrenal system is triggered all of the functions of the body that run the thriving mechanisms stop and the survival mechanisms begin.  Illness is survival.  Wellness is thriving.

To get well you must understand these two great forces in the body: Thriving and Survival.  We simply give the body the raw material it needs.  The body will do the rest.  If you want to be well you must activate thrival.  To be healthy simply:
  • Correct Digestive Issues
  • Stabilize Blood Sugar
  • Focus on Adrenal Health
To promote adrenal health pharmacist Ben Fuchs suggest:Magnesium,  Zinc, Vitamin C, B Complex, Deep Breathing, Whole Salt, Plant Derived Minerals, or use Youngevity - Beyond Tangy Tangerine, The Ultimate Classic, Tangy Tangerine and from Kyani - Sunrise, Sunset and Nitro Xtreme.

The adrenal glands are producing hormones that regulate the growth system and the stress system.  The two adrenal glands, no bigger than a penny are managing anabolic hormones for growth, repair, healing, youth and thriving and the stress hormones.  If the adrenal glands are making stress hormones, specifically cortisol they will not be as efficient in making the hormones of growth and youth.   Nothing will make a person age faster than the diversion of the adrenal glands to making stress hormones.

Four ways to know if GMOs are making you fatter
(NaturalNews) Besides what we already know about the dangers of consuming genetically modified foods, these "frankenfoods" now appear to play a key role in the current obesity pandemic.... Through food, beverages and drinking water alone, the average American consumes between 10 and 13 different pesticides every single day. And with nine of the 10 most common pesticides being known endocrine disruptors, the origins of this fatter, sicker population may be less of a mystery than conventional spin doctors might like us to think. A person experiencing weight gain in conjunction with any of the following lifestyle patterns or behaviors can be sure the destructive forces of GMOs are hard at work in their own bodies...

Mexico hit by diabetes epidemic as processed American foods take over
(NaturalNews) As the U.S. trade deficit continues to soar, the one thing America has been successful at exporting is its fast food industry, and with it, all of the health problems it causes.

Dr. Oz: Kick your 'Frankenwheat' wheat addiction to lose up to 15 lbs in 30 days Could you be addicted to wheat? Has food processing spawned a new age of products containing "Frankenwheat?" Dr. Mehmet Oz explored those issues and more on his Dec. 3 talk show devoted to investigating the potential woes of wheat addiction, from belly bloat to headaches to digesive woes. His guest: Dr. William Davis, who contends that today's wheat, called "Frankenwheat" by some practioners, is the result of genetics manipulations designed to produce more wheat per acre.

Magnesium's Importance Far Greater Than Previously Imagined

Magnesium's Importance Far Greater Than Previously Imagined
Calcium deficiency is a common nutritional concern, but how many folks consider the vital importance of magnesium in human health and disease?

New research published in the journal BMC Bioinformatics indicates that magnesium's role in human health and disease is far more significant and complicated than previously imagined.

While it is well known that all living things require magnesium, and that it is found in over 300 enzymes in the human body, including those enzymes utilizing or synthesizing ATP (the molecular unit of currency for energy transfer), the new studied titled, "3,751 magnesium binding sites have been detected on human proteins," indicates that a deficiency of magnesium may profoundly affect a far wider range of biological structures than previously understood.[i]

The proteome, or entire set of proteins expressed by the human genome, contains well over 100,000 distinct protein structures, despite the fact that there are believed to be only 20,300 protein-coding genes in the human genome.
The discovery of the "magneseome," as its being called, adds additional complexity to the picture, indicating that the presence or absence of adequate levels of this basic mineral may epigenetically alter the expression and behavior of the proteins in our body, thereby altering the course of both health and disease.

Indeed, modern medicine and nutrition fixates primarily on calcium deficiency (due, in part, to the WHO's highly unscientific definition of osteoporosis), even in the face of accumulating peer-reviewed research indicating that excess calcium consumption can greatly increase cardiac morbidity and mortality.

Magnesium Research

Research relevant to magnesium has been accumulating for the past 40 years at a steady rate of approximately 2,000 new  studies a year. Our database project has indexed well over 100 health benefits of magnesium thus far.  For the sake of brevity, we will address seven key therapeutic applications for magnesium as follows:
  • Fibromyalgia: Not only is magnesium deficiency common in those diagnosed with fibromyalgia, [ii] [iii] but relatively low doses of magnesium (50 mg), combined with malic acid in the form of magnesium malate, has been clinically demonstrated to improve pain and tenderness in those to which it was administered.[iv]
  • Atrial Fibrillation: A number of studies now exist showing that magnesium supplementation reduce atrial fibrillation, either by itself, or in combination with conventional drug agents.[v]
  • Diabetes, Type 2: Magnesium deficiency is common in type 2 diabetics, at an incidence of 13.5 to 47.7% according to a 2007 study.[vi]   Research has also shown that type 2 diabetics with peripheral neuropathy and coronary artery disease have lower intracellular magnesium levels.[vii] Oral magnesium supplementation has been shown to reduce plasma fasting glucose and raising HDL cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes.[viii] It has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic control in type 2 diabetic subjects.[ix]
  • Premenstrual Syndrome: Magnesium deficiency has been observed in women affected by premenstrual syndrome.[x] It is no surprise therefore  that it has been found to alleviate premenstrual symptoms of fluid retention,[xi] as well as broadly reducing associated symptoms by approximately 34% in women, aged 18-45, given 250 mg tablets for a 3-month observational period.[xii] When combined with B6, magnesium supplementation has been found to improve anxiety-related premenstrual symptoms.[xiii]
  • Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality: Low serum magnesium concentrations predict cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.[xiv]  There are a wide range of ways that magnesium may confer its protective effects. It may act like a calcium channel blocker,[xv] it is hypotensive,[xvi] it is antispasmodic (which may protect against coronary artery spasm),[xvii] and anti-thrombotic.[xviii] Also, the heart muscle cells are exceedingly dense in mitochondria (as high as 100 times more per cell than skeletal muscle), the "powerhouses" of the cell," which require adequate magnesium to produce ATP via the citric acid cycle.
  • Migraine Disorders: Blood magnesium levels have been found to be significantly lower in those who suffer from migraine attacks.[xix] [xx] A recent Journal of Neural Transmission article titled, "Why all migraine patients should be treated with magnesium," pointed out that routine blood tests do not accurately convey the true body magnesium stores since less than 2% is in the measurable, extracellular space, "67% is in the bone and 31% is located intracellularly."[xxi] The authors argued that since "routine blood tests are not indicative of magnesium status, empiric treatment with at least oral magnesium is warranted in all migraine sufferers." Indeed, oral magnesium supplementation has been found to reduce the number of headache days in children experiencing frequent migranous headaches, [xxii] and when combined with l-carnitine, is effective at reducing migraine frequency in adults, as well.[xxiii]
  • Aging: While natural aging is a healthy process, accelerated aging has been noted to be a feature of magnesium deficiency,[xxiv] especially evident in the context of long space-flight missions where low magnesium levels are associated with cardiovascular aging over 10 times faster than occurs on earth.[xxv] Magnesium supplementation has been shown to reverse age-related neuroendocrine and sleep EEG changes in humans.[xxvi] One of the possible mechanisms behind magnesium deficiency associated aging is that magnesium is needed to stabilize DNA and promotes DNA replication. It is also involved in healing up of the ends of the chromosomes after they are divided in mitosis.[xxvii]

Best Sources of Magnesium In The Diet

The best source of magnesium is from food, and one way to identify magnesium-containing foods are those which are green, i.e. chlorophyll rich. Chlorophyll, which enable plants to capture solar energy and convert it into metabolic energy, has a magnesium atom at its center. Without magnesium, in fact, plants could not utilize the sun's light energy.
Magnesium, however, in its elemental form is colorless, and many foods that are not green contain it as well. The point is that when found complexed with food cofactors, it is absorbed and utilized more efficiently than in its elemental form, say, extracted from limestone in the form of magnesium oxide.
The following foods contain exceptionally high amounts of magnesium. The portions described are 100 grams, or a little over three ounces.
  • Rice bran, crude (781 mg)
  • Seaweed, agar, dried (770 mg)
  • Chives, freeze-dried (640 mg)
  • Spice, coriander leaf, dried (694 mg)
  • Seeds, pumpkin, dried (535 mg)
  • Cocoa, dry powder, unsweetened (499 mg)
  • Spices, basil, dried (422 mg)
  • Seeds, flaxseed (392 mg)
  • Spices, cumin seed (366 mg)
  • Nuts, brazilnuts, dried (376 mg)
  • Parsley, freeze-dried (372 mg)
  • Seeds, sesame meal (346 mg)
  • Nut, almond butter (303 mg)
  • Nuts, cashew nuts, roasted (273 mg)
  • Soy flour, defatted (290 mg)
  • Whey, sweet, dried (176 mg)
  • Bananas, dehydrated (108 mg)
  • Millet, puffed (106 mg)
  • Shallots, freeze-dried (104 mg)
  • Leeks, freeze-dried (156 mg)
  • Fish, salmon, raw (95 mg)
  • Onions, dehydrated flakes (92 mg)
  • Kale, scotch, raw (88 mg)
Fortunately, for those who need higher doses, or are not inclined to consume magnesium rich foods, there are supplemental forms commonly available on the market. Keep in mind, for those who wish to take advantage of the side benefit of magnesium therapy, namely, its stool softening and laxative properties, magnesium citrate or oxide will provide this additional feature.

For those looking to maximize absorption and bioavailability magnesium glycinate is ideal, as glycine is the smallest amino acid commonly found chelated to magnesium, and therefore highly absorbable.

Is Butter Bad for You? The Real Benefits of Real Butter

butterheart 255x159 Is Butter Bad for You? The Real Benefits of Real ButterIs butter bad for you? Sweet, salty butter has become a decadent treat for many people, something that some have shunned for years for fear of the vilified “saturated fat”. But now that the hype of margarine has been sufficiently shattered, we can take a more honest look at butter. A look that isn’t colored by the companies making margarine, one that might reveal butter to actually be beneficial to our health. At least when it’s in the right form.

For decades, people ate butter with nearly every meal, smeared on bread with fresh (homemade) jam or slathered over (non-GMO) corn. But in the 1920s when margarine made its debut, things changed for the creamy topper. We were quite literally sold on the benefits of this man-made chemical storm competitor, and only later would we figure out that it contained something called trans fats—far more dangerous than the saturated fats it chased us away from.

From margarine, we moved to healthier fats like those in olive oil and coconut oil. These are great sources of good fat, and no one would argue otherwise. However, we are still missing that bread-topping creamy goodness of real butter. And why? Though we were fed information that butter caused heart disease, is it any coincidence that the rate of heart disease has skyrocketed since we abandoned butter for margarine? Since we were scared away from saturated fats, the number of Americans battling preventable diet-related diseases has grown. Perhaps the alternatives we’ve sought out (margarine and other highly processed foods) are actually worse for us.

Is Butter Bad for You? Examining the Benefits

Butter is not bad for you. There are several little-known benefits of real butter, including:
  • It is one of the most easily absorbable sources of Vitamin A
  • It’s rich in important trace minerals, including chromium, manganese, copper, zinc, and selenium (a powerful antioxidant).
  • It contains cancer-preventing conjugated linoleic acids (CLA)
  • It is a good source of Vitamin K2, for teeth and bone health
  • Butter contains iodine, good for a healthy thyroid
  • Rich in vitamins A and E
  • The saturated fats within have anti-tumor properties
  • Butter does not lead to weight gain as it is burned quickly for energy rather than stored
And perhaps most surprising, butter is a good source of dietary cholesterol, and unlike you’ve been told, this cholesterol can help protect the body from damage by free radicals found in things like vegetable oils and trans fats. So, not only does it have its own redeeming qualities—it can combat the negative qualities of the poison we tried replacing it with.

Common Heart Drug Kills 41% More Often than Not Taking It

Common Heart Drug Kills 41% More Often than Not Taking It

December 5, 2012

Whatever possessed medicos to use a known poison as a treatment for heart disease, there can be no possible excuse for the decades of harm and the millions of people who have died as a result of the deadly drug, digitalis.
by Heidi Stevenson, published in Gaia Health
Death and the Maiden, by Catarina Carneiro de Sousa
Death and the Maiden, by Catarina Carneiro de Sousa.

For decades, the standard medical treatment for irregular heartbeat has been digitalis, now usually sold under the generic name of digoxin. It’s a killer, and no other term comes close to describing its effects. It kills 41% more people who take it than those who do not. Whether the patient-victims have diagnosed heart disease or not, and whether they’re male or female makes no difference. If you take digitalis, you’re 41% more likely to die.
A study published in the European Heart Journal concludes that, though digitalis does help steady erratic heart beats, it does so at an enormous cost:
Our findings suggest that, in patients with AF, digoxin is associated with increased all-cause mortality after controlling for comorbidities and propensity scores, regardless of gender and the presence or absence of underlying HF. All-cause mortality was 41% higher in patients on digoxin.
There is no hemming or hawing around in that conclusion. If you take digoxin, also known as digitalis, you are 41% more likely to die—and that includes the likelihood of dying from heart disease itself or any other cause.
Digoxin Study Results GraphIf you relate to graphics better, simply look at the graph to the left. This shows the survival rates, in terms of Kaplan-Meier curves of the 4060 subjects in the study.
The data comes from the Follow-Up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) trial. The 4060 subjects were followed an average (mean) of 3.5 years. They were seen for follow-ups at the first 2 and 4 month markers, and then every 4 months up to a maximum of 6 years.

Instead of focusing on deaths from heart disease, these authors looked at all-cause mortality. Obviously what matters is not simply whether the drug keeps you from dying of a particular cause, but how it affects your chances of dying from any cause. There’s no benefit in avoiding death from a heart attack if you’re more likely to die from other causes.
The study showed that in patients with atrial fibrillation, but no diagnosis of heart failure, digitalis was responsible for 37% more deaths.

The authors clearly stated that patients without congestive heart failure and low ejection fraction cannot gain any benefit whatsoever from digitalis. As they point out, this is not new information.

Patients with congestive heart failure or ejection fraction less than 40% do see some benefit in terms of heart disease. Nonetheless, those patients still end up with an overall increase of 41% in death. Whatever benefit they gain is far more than offset by the harm.

Results were the same for men and women.

Digitalis is a poison, originally derived from the common garden and wild flower, foxglove. It kills by causing an irregular heartbeat and low blood pressure, not to mention also causing blurred vision, confusion, depression, disorientation and hallucinations, fainting, seeing halos around objects, headaches, lethargy, appetite loss, hives, weakness and drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

Obviously, the medical profession has been killing people by the thousands and millions over the decades they’ve been prescribing digitalis, or its more recent formulation under the name of digoxin. First do no harm is apparently nothing more than a bad joke in modern medicine.
