Non-medical Stroke Recovery Part I

If you have had or know anyone who has had a stroke then you know how devastating it can be.  I know because in 2010 I had a Transient Stroke on the left side of the brain which left me unable to speak and to walk.  I want to share with you some of the lessons I learned after my experience.

The statistics are frightening.  In the U.S. there are 800,000 strokes per year according to the Centers for Disease Control.  130,000 strokes result in death.  According to the CDC 1 in 19 deaths is because of stroke and there is a stroke every 4 minutes in America.

Do I believe the CDC? No.  I believe the problem is far worse.  I believe that once you understand the causes and nature of stroke you will see that people are actually having strokes all the time and are not being counted as stroke.  I am a good example.  Before I had a stroke bad enough to paralyze me and send me to the hospital I apparently had had several undiagnosed incidences as seen on an MRI scan.

Stroke is not a disease.  It is a condition where blood to the brain is obstructed.  One of the first things I soon learned is that the doctors who were in charge of my care had no clue of my medical condition.  I was diagnosed with high blood pressure.  My "blood sugar" was fine.  I was paralyzed due to damage to cells in my brain.  My cholesterol was normal.  But it is not likely a doctor would allow you to be hospitalized and not perform tests and prescribe drugs.

The doctor prescribed 5 drugs including several blood pressure lowering medications, and aspirin.  But as we began to ask questions we soon learned that the doctor had not tested me for mineral and vitamin deficiencies.  And he had not tested me for elevated homosystein levels.

After the blood pressure was lowered I was sent home.  In other words there was absolutely nothing he offered to assist me with rebuilding the brain damage and to avoid another stroke.  We had to take matters into our hands and learn about my own health care.
