Pottenger's Cats



By now you realize that this blog is not about repeating the same old tired myths about health.  One of the biggest myths is the idea that wheat and other grains are good for you; you know, like multi-grain breads and cereals, whole wheat or cracked wheat products, pasta's of all kinds, etc.  WRONG!  Wheat and grains in general such as Barley, Rye, and Oats are not good for you.  In fact they can kill you.  Wheat is one of the most destructive foods known to mankind.

Not only are grains harmful because of the gluten but the way that the body deals with grains is the cause of numerous conditions including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, obesity and the other usual suspects; what has become known as Metabolic Syndrome.

Now just when you thought you understood how to eat healthy you are going to learn that your foods have been deliberately altered.  GMO is the latest concern we have.  This is a problem that is not going to go away.  In fact, one prominent scientist estimates that 90% of the food on the planet is already GMO.

Not so in the case of the wheat.  Wheat does not have to be GMO'd because modern day wheat has been hybridized already.  This is not the same wheat your ancestors ate and it is a far cry from the wheat the ancient Egyptians first cultivated.  By the way, in that group called grains we must include white rice, corn and soy bean which is not a grain but there are so many products which use soy we have to include it because of the damage it causes.  The majority of these crops are GMO and have been designed to impact your daily life by feminizing males, over feminizing females, killing pollinating bees and immunizing insects against certain pesticides.

Just look around you.  How many healthy people do you see.  The population is obese.  Boys have breasts.  Girls go into puberty at 7 years old.  Children have diabetes and cancer.  Women have excess estrogen production.  Infertility in males and females is common.  What's that?  "Don't be so negative you say".  Alright.  Let's just look the other way.  But obviously there is something wrong with the food we eat and the medicines we take for the diseases they cause.  We will try to shed some light on what is going on.  But we ask you to keep an open mind and to use some common sense.

Technology has redefined the concept of food.  What is meant by this is that for thousands of years our ancestors ate naturally based on locality and what was in season.  Further more, our diets were based on protein in the form of meats, fish and fats.  For fiber we ate such things as berries, leafy green vegetables and nuts.  We were hunter gatherers.

Food was barely cooked, most of the time it was eaten raw or dried.  When it was cooked it was cooked slowly under low heat from wood or dung.  We preserved our foods.   Remember the pictures of the Inuit eating raw whale blubber.  There was no heart disease or cancer or diabetes.  They also fermented their foods as a form of preserving them. They would bury the food and let it ferment until they could smell it a half a mile away.  As long as there were animals around the native peoples knew they would have food to eat.  Many people ate grubs and insects.

Another strategy was to eat roots and tubers.  Large sweet fruits like giant apples and peaches were hybridized later on.  They are not heirloom or wild.  They are cultivated and bred to fetch the highest price possible.  Today's fruits are super sweet, full of sugar and uniform in size and color.  They have a longer shelf life.  Of course they must use lots of pesticides and fungesides on them to keep the insects and fungi away.

Sugar and carbohydrates were not a big part of the diet in the old days. People then ate raw food, raw meats, bone marrow, blood mixed with milk and insects. This may sound disgusting but there was no heart disease, no cancer, no high blood pressure either.   Many cultures did not even have words for these illnesses.  And it was not because of modern medicines and vaccines that made the people healthy.  Probably the greatest advancement in health was the ability to wash the hands with clean water and soap.

Our ancestors were self-reliant.  They hunted, fished and foraged for what they ate.  Through technology self-reliance was wiped out.  People were pushed into cities as they are being pushed to this day and neo-feudalism in the form of being dependent on large organizations to eat was born.  The development of the "herd mentality" represented a departure from the self-reliance that had prevailed for thousands of years and allowed our ancestors to be healthy.

It is true that many people had a shorter life span.  But this was more due to a lack of clean water for drinking and washing rather than their diets and modern medicines.  In fact, many deaths can be directly attributed to the use of pharmaceutical products.

The use of grains particularly wheat was begun on a commercial level because it could easily be farmed despite the fact grains were a poor substitute for the foods that humans needed.  Also, depleted soils could be chemically fertilized so that the wheat could grow.   Added to this manipulation of Mother Nature was the fact that grains could be stored and then eaten when times were lean.

The wheat we eat today is not at all like the wheat of our ancestors.  Today's wheat is a hybrid.  The stalks are shorter and designed for easier handling.  Humans are not able to digest this wheat efficiently.  It is the most destructive food we consume on a regular basis. Humans are not cows.  Cows and many other four legged animals ferment their foods in their stomachs.  Humans like dogs digest their food.  Carbohydrates we consume in the form of vegetables must be digested relatively quickly and absorbed.  Cows, on the other hand store the food in their stomachs so that the bacteria can digest the food for them thus allowing them to absorb the nutrition.

Rather than eating grasses and vegetables as herbivores we are better suited to feed the wheat and vegetables to the herbivore animals and then eat the animals. There is a good reason for this.  What we require are the minerals in the soil.  We can not eat them directly.  The plant life concentrates the minerals  for us.  The animals further concentrate the minerals in the plants when they consume them.  We eat the animals where all the minerals have been concentrated and put in a form that we can absorb.  But there is a deeper reason why we should eat meat and not the feed of animals.

In the old days people ate eggs and milk dairy products that was stored as Yogurt and Kefir.  High quality protein was the natural choice as part of the human's diet.  The famous explorer of modern Northern Canada, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the author of "Not By Bread Alone" explained the wonders of living by eating meats and fish.  To him the natural way of living was preferred to city living which included the use of grains as the primary source of food.  I told you that you had to have an open mind.  What is said here is directly opposite to what you are being told and what you think you know.  So you had better pay attention if you want to survive.

Where as the Atkins Diet is a variation of "The Stone Age" diet, the key difference is in the preparation of the food.  Fast cooking with modern stoves and ovens, cooking oil and heavy starches resulted in meats and fats going rancid in the belly relatively quickly.  The Paleolithic diet, a more subtle diet,  is a further commercialization of traditional eating.

Up until 1985 people ate freely salt, butter, meats, fish, etc.  After 1985 an effort was undertaken to persuade the public to switch away from meats and more towards the herbivore diet with emphasis on grain consumption.  But if you observe you will see that at that same time obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. began to explode and is estimated to devastate the earth's human population.  Could this just be a coincidence?  Do you dare to question the TV wisdom?

Adding more fuel to the fire is the fact that pharmaceutical companies have made a fortune selling medicines to handle all the illnesses and conditions caused by eating grains.  You will notice those medicinal products and treatments have made hardly any impact in the incidence of obesity and other illnesses despite the "good intentions" of the pharmaceutical industry.   The anti-cancer campaign has had no slowing of cancer's proliferation.  Soon cancer will touch the lives of 50% of the population.  The same can be said of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and any other disease for which billions of dollars of research have been spent and medications have been sold.

This is not speculation.  This is fact.  Have you ever wondered why it is that fat people can not seem to lose weight no matter how hard they try?  Or why more and more people are sick even though they take plenty of pills?  Exercise alone will not cause you to lose weight.  The fact is, if you put the body under stress you will gain weight or even become sicker as a response.   Hospitals are full of would be athletes who unintentionally placed themselves at risk by exercising while being undernourished.  They ate bowls and bowls of soy products, salads, sugary fruits and grains like oats and wheat in cereals and breads not realizing that these items were GMO and not adequate to maintain good health and not the path to health and performance.  Where did they get this idea from?

How many athletes still drink sugary drinks and artificially sweetened drinks and eat "carbs" in the form of pasta and bread supposedly for extra energy?  How many obese people drink diet drinks laced with artificial sweeteners and are just as fat as ever if not more?  Is that you?

What you do not realize is that powerful companies have spent a lot of money to persuade the public to stop eating the very foods that allowed them to thrive,  grow, heal, perform and be strong.  How can they sell medications to a healthy population?  They want you to eat foods that they can manufacture from chemicals and control which they know will result in poor health.

How did mankind go from a healthy hunter gatherer society to a sickly, dependent neo-feudalistic society?  Wheat might be part of that answer.  Whereas in the past people would eat meat and fish through hunting, fishing and trapping, today's modern man has evolved to depend on grains, cereals, filler and so on for his sustenance found in super markets from unknown sources rather than his skill and knowledge of his environment.

Sure the environment has been destroyed; but by whom?  The very same companies who blame the public for the destruction of the environment are the same ones who want to sell you the artificial foods.  Hidden deep within their strategy is the idea to switch the population from meats and eggs to grains and artificial foods. 

Man has been taught to depend on completely artificial sources of food which only leads to disease.  Man has become the target for those who want to sell a witches brew of chemicals disguised as food and medicines for the troubles these fake foods and grains cause.  These foods are so awful that they have to be enhanced with flavors, colors, smells and tastes just to get us to eat them.  Even ants and pets will not eat much of what is being presented as food.  Let us look at the science.

In study after study lab rats and lab animals have been shown to develop severe diseases after being forced to eat artificial food.  Rats eating GMO corn developed huge tumors and obesity.  Cows are fed grains to fatten them just before slaughter.  How many of those cows would have survived had they not been slaughtered?  Many of them could barely walk to the processing plant.  What happens to dogs and cats if you feed them grains and carbohydrates?  There have been plenty of books and studies about this.  A synopsis of "Pottenger's Cats" is a classic which is the result of a multi-generational study of cats and diets.  It  can be found here.

There are two nervous systems to consider:  The "sympathetic nervous system" and the "parasympathetic nervous system".  These two systems are represented by the "fight or flight" response and the "rest and relax response".  High blood pressure, heart disease,  diabetes, obesity, neuropathy, brain dysfunction and other chronic diseases are the body's response to a perceived threat.  If the sympathetic nervous system is activated for instance where there is stress or not enough oxygen or too much sugar the response will be what we call disease and problem symptoms such as high blood pressure, insulin resistance or cardiovascular disease.  If the parasympathetic nervous system is activated then a response in the form of wellness, homeostasis,  happiness, wholeness, health will be created.

Growth, healing, repairing, a feeling of well being, good restful sleeping, dreaming, digestion and absorption of nutrition are due to the rest and relax response.  That response is found through the parasympathetic nervous system which is activated by beauty, love, meditation, soothing music, warm baths, walking barefoot on the earth, and eating correctly.  Deep oxygenated breathing and drinking plenty of clean water will also trigger the repair and healing response of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Sugar and fast burning carbohydrates cause the sympathetic nervous system to become activated.  Sugar feeds bad bacteria, viruses, fungus, molds and pathogens.  It cause them to over proliferate and they consume the body.  The wastes of these life forms results in toxicity and a clogging of the vital organ systems.   The body goes into a catabolic state.  Once in the catabolic state the body begins to breakdown.  Plus further damage is done to the body when carbohydrates and oxygen explode in the body.  All of this creates free radical damage or oxidative stess a known cause of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and so on.  This has a cascading effect.

Fermentation is the converting of sugars to CO2 and alcohol.  This process results in the acidification of the body which further damages the body (cells) and lowers the PH.  In a low PH environment cancer, fungus, infections and diseases can grow.  The human body is designed to digest food not ferment it in the gut as a cow would do.  The result of fermentation within the gut is devastating.

By eating grains you are basically eating sugar which will result in the catabolic condition and create an environment which is ideal for disease.  Once the body perceives that there is a threat to its health  the Sympathetic Nervous system will become activated and you will begin to store calories as fat in case of famine.  You become obese.  The body breaks down.  The body further responds in an attempt to reestablish homeostasis.  We call this unfortunate condition Metabolic Syndrome.

Adding further insult to injury is that sugar in the system acts as an explosive poison.  It requires insulin to manage it which is made by the pancreas.  The pancreas makes other important enzymes besides the hormone insulin.  If the pancreas becomes dysfunctional or inflammed other operations in the body will be affected.   Also too much insulin in the body results in type II Diabetes, hormonal problems, unnatural growth of cells and even cancer.  All this damage just for a loaf of bread or a bowl of spaghetti? 

By avoiding grains this condition is also avoided and with proper stress management techniques the Parasympathetic Nervous System will become the dominating mode of existence.  That system will involve increased oxygen to the cells and better health will ensue.  Blood pressure is lowered, the biochemical reactions will place the body into the rest and relax mode.  The body can heal and repair. Nutrition can be absorbed.

In many societies bread and liquid bread in the form of beer is very much a part of a daily routine.  However, there is a relationship between the consumption of grains and overall health.

As was stated above, grain growing was a financially inspired decision rather than one that was based on health.  Vast commercial farms have been dedicated to this practice for the making of grains to be ground into flour, pastas and cereals.  How much of the Western economy is based on Pizzas, buns and pastries?  How many spreads and jams have been created to put on the breads?  But at the end of this inocuous looking "food" is misery, illness, disease, medications,medical procedures and finally death.

Today, our food is further being manipulated supposedly to feed the people of the planet.  However, based on what is known about grains, it is rather obvious that there will be health consequences.  Just as the grains were transformed to feed us so will the other natural sources of food be transformed.  The only problem is that those manipulations will create the sicknesses which will result in further sales of drugs and medications, early death and a lot of suffering in the meantime.  This is evidenced by the use of Genetically Modified Organisms as food and has been shown recently to cause cancerous tumors and obesity in rats.  There is no reason to believe that these "foods" will not do the same to us.

How Our Bodies Communicate

Food and nutrition is information.  When we eat we transmit that information to our cells.

Food is the method we use to instruct our bodies how to behave.   If we eat correctly we communicate health.  If we eat incorrectly we communicate sickness.  Wellness is not based on medicines to make you well.  It is based on choosing to communicate our well being.  On the other hand we may also communicate that we are not okay by the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the stress we live under. 

When we communicate to the body that we are thriving and not under attack either physically, emotionally, psychologically or spiritually we will be healthy.  When we communicate that we are under assault the body will breakdown and we become ill.

Poisons, artificial substances and fake foods all drive us into a fight or flight mode, "survival".  There are also natural substances such as Melatonin which communicate to the body that we are well.  In such cases the body moves from survival mode to thrive mode.  At the survival mode we store energy as fat.  We stop digesting our food.  Blood flow is restricted to vital organs. The physiology of the body responds with faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, dilated pupils, slower brain function and more sugar in the blood.

In thrive mode the body relaxes, blood flow increases to the extremities, pupils are at the normal size and the brain functions at a faster, higher level. 

In fact, during the middle ages women used to deliberately enhance their beauty by taking Bella Dona, which means "beautiful woman".  Bella  Dona makes the skin flush,  the heart to beat faster and  most importantly the pupils of the eyes to dilate which was thought to make the woman more beautiful.


Melatonin As A Commercial Product

The human body needs 90 essential natural nutrients.  These nutrients can not be manufactured or synthesized.  They must come from nature to be effective.  Melatonin is the most amazing nutrient.  It is made by the body and can accomplish so much for people who want to optimize health and reverse the aging process.  Yet this wonder nutrient is not appreciated and can not fit easily into a 3 minute sound bite.

There are several strikes against melatonin as a commercially viable product.  The biggest strike is that it is very cheap.  For about $3 to $4 per month you can achieve ultimate health.  Perhaps this is why melatonin is not talked about very much.  It is one of those substances that makes too  much sense and not enough profit for the big producers.  It flies in the face of ridiculous and expensive drugs and treatments which don't actually work.

Anti-hypertensive medications for instance do not actually work.  They mimic a cure by hiding the symptoms of high blood pressure while overlooking the true cause.  Indeed all drugs do the same.  Health is the reflection of the body's environment.  It is not the result of a chemical trick that misleads the body and interferes with how the body communicates through nutrition.   Just as cigarette smoking seems to calm the nerves and alcohol makes a person seem uninhibited.  In reality these drugs poison or block the body's natural processes.  The body is put into survival mode as it must now deal with a toxic environment.     That is the second strike against melatonin.  Rather than placing the  body in a survival condition it returns the body to the rest and repair, relax and heal condition, the thrive condition.  This is death to a drug manufacturer who's business model is based on illness and false beliefs.

The fact that melatonin is made by the human body is strike three.  If the body can make its own melatonin then how can the drug companies make money?  Sort of like suggesting that mother's milk is not as good for baby as powdered formula.  Or that GMO's are better than real food.  This is completely unnatural and alien to the human body.

Melatonin is made in the gut primarily.  That is strike number four.  If you can get all that you need by choosing to eat healthily you will have no trouble making melatonin.  If melatonin were exclusively made in the brain then people would have less control over their melatonin production  and that would put the food and drug companies in the driver's seat where they like to be when it comes to profit making.  But actually if you have a complete healthy diet you will make melatonin and not need them.


Reduced Melatonin Production

As we age the amount of melatonin made in the body is reduced.  That means that we must pay close attention to what we eat and nowadays we must supplement..  Paying attention and supplementing are the last things that a food and drug company would want.  They want you totally oblivious as to how the body works and not knowing how to keep it functioning without them.

But what exactly does melatonin do besides put food and drug companies out of business?  Before we can answer this question we have to understand a few important facts:
  1. The average American consumes a third of a pound of fructose per day in the form of manufactured food.
  2. The average American eats about 80 to 100 pounds of fructose in processed foods per year.
  3. All chronic disease is caused by cellular inflammation and micro-inflammation.
  4. The medical establishment tells us that there are 12,000 diseases; everything from acne to arthritis to cardiovascular disease to autoimmune diseases.  In reality there is only one actual disease.  All the rest are symptoms of the same problem.
  5. Chronic disease is the other side of immune system activation.
  6. The main source of a defense immune activation is food.
  7. The body is a self-healing mechanism not like a car which is prone to breakdown with use and must be fixed.  The body repairs itself if it has the nutrients to work with
  8. No drug can repair the body. 
  9. In order to be healthy the body must not be in a survival posture but a posture which promotes healing and health.  A posture of safety.  A posture of rest and relaxation.
  10. The human body responds to threat or attack with the fight or flight response.  Healing takes place in the rest and relax mode.  Obesity, disease, breakdown and other chronic conditions are the result of the body being placed in the fight or flight response mode.


Melatonin's Role

If you can accept these concepts then you will understand the importance that melatonin plays.

The single most important anti-aging biochemical process in the body is to get a good night's rest.  In the rest and repair cycle the body heals and repairs itself.  It is also at this time that the body digests and absorbs food.  And it is food where we get our sustenance.  Without a good nights rest it may indicate any number of health conditions.  This may be caused be deficiencies in:

  • zinc
  • magnesium
  • enzymes
  • calcium
  • amino acids
  • seratonin
  • folic acid
  • protein
  • vitamin
  • and a host of other deficiencies

Deficiencies in vital nutrients lead to all of the diseases known to mankind.  Melatonin not only assures you get a good night's sleep but it also acts as an anti-inflammatory and aids in the absorption of Tryptophan which slows the aging process,  It is important for mental health and it acts as an anti-oxidant. 

At night the body is making melatonin.  Also at night the body is using melatonin.  People should take it as a supplement before going to bed.  Not only will you sleep well but you will have great dreams.  Melatonin helps in the production of Tryptophan and Tryptophan is necessary in the production of melantonin.  This implies that an interruption in the melatonin cycle can result a cascading decline of mental and physical health.  Older people are much more at risk as their bodies produce less and less melatonin with time.

Any kind of intestinal or gut problem will reduce the absorption of Tryptophan and this will results in melatonin deficiency. That means more inflammation, more aging, more breakdown, more mental problems and trouble sleeping. 


The Other Roles of Melatonin

Most people know that melatonin is supportive  in the brain for sleep.  But few realize the important role it plays in gastrointestinal and digestive health.  It is a very important  nutritional supplement for digestive inflammation, heartburn or gerd.  The esophagus is important as is the whole gastrointestinal tract in the production of melatonin.  500 times more melatonin is produced in the intestinal tract than the pineal gland.  

There are 40  Million Americans,  today who are dealing with acid reflux disease.  If they go to the doctor they are more than likely going to be prescribed a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) drug like Prylosec or Nexium which suppresses acid production.   Acid reflux is not caused by too much acid.  Heartburn is not caused by too much acid.  According to Dr. Johnathan Rice in his book "Why Stomach Acid Is Good For You" or Dr. Sherry Roger's book, "No More Heartburn".

Acid Reflux disease is caused by a breakdown in the chemistry of the stomach and the connection between the stomach and the esophagus called the sphincter.  Too little stomach acid can cause the food to stay in the stomach too long where it can ferment and cause the sphincter to become weak.  Further, acid is necessary for the absorption of nutrients such as zinc.  If you have gerd most likely you are eating the wrong foods especially sugars and especially fructose.

Melatonin and PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) -  Means Anxiety Disorder.  It comes after you have been involved in some sort of traumatic stress experience. There are three main categories of the disease:

1, Reliving the event

2. Avoiding things like people, places and things, showing less of your moods

3. Jittery or aroused, trouble concentrating startled easily, trouble falling asleep and  staying asleep

The latest medical questionable practice is called a Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB).  SGB is a surgical procedure where the brain's connection to the body is cut. 

Anxiety is triggered when a certain area of the brain interprets the body's chemistry  as evidence that it is under some kind of an attack.   The brain is constantly reading the body.   There is an  area of the  brain called the Amygdala which is the anger center.  When the Amydala sees that there is physiological stress, if you are holding your body in a certain position stress chemicals can rise in the Amygdala which will trigger a stress response.  An SGB  will physically disconnect the body from the Amygdala.  The brain will partially be cut off from the body at that point.  If you have anxiety problems a person may be better off using melatonin instead of drugs or surgery.

One of the contributing factors in PTSD is deficiencies in the raw materials for making melatonin.  People with PTSD are notoriously deficient in Tryptophan and have trouble with digestive issues.   Many people with PTSD have problems with insomnia.  Therefore, if  you take melantonin it can help you deal with PTSD, naturally . 


Melatonin and the Immune System

Melatonin is very important for the immune system.  All diseas has underlying breakdown.  Chronic disease is about inflammation and all inflammation is an immune or defense response.  So any thing we can do to improve our immune health is going to positively effect an of the 12,000 different diseases.    Some researchers feel that aging itself is a breakdown in the immune system.

Rather than taking vaccines for flu season you may want to use melatonin.  Make sure  you are eating properly. make sure you are getting the essential Amino Acids including the precursors to melatonin such as Tryptophan and high protein foods.

Melatonin is one of the best supplements you can take to build your immune system.  The use of melatonin is much more effective than the usual prescribed medications of Valium and Zanex which are technically called Benzodiazopin's.  They work by keeping brain chemicals locked into place.  Basically, they poison the receptors of nerve cells so that  the nerve cells are forced into relaxing.  Melatonin actually does the same thing except it does not poison the nerve cells.  This is the difference between supplements and drugs.

Taking melatonin may add years to your lfie.  Melatonin tells the body that it is safe and secure.  When the brain thinks that things are good the thriving systems begins and healing and repairing can start.  But the brain has to get the biochemical message that the body is safe. 

The body is either in stess mode or it is in relaxation mode.  Stress mode is great for survival.  It is represented by by the fight or flight response.  This arrousal neverous system is called the "Sympathetic" nervous system.   The stress nervous system accelerates your heartbeat.  It dilates the pupils.  Shuts down the digestive system. Stimulates adrenal hormones,   It stimulates the release of sugar from the liver.  Prepares you to run away from a threat like a Saber Tooth Tiger.  But it has it's limits.  Life is substantially shortened as the body can not heal, repair or digest.

Aspartame Damages The Brain at Any Dose

Did you know that Aspartame has been proven to cause brain damage by leaving traces of Methanol in the blood? It makes you wonder why Aspartame has been approved as “safe” and is found in thousands of food products. Currently more than 90 countries have given the artificial sweetener the “OK” to be used in foods.

Given that Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, manufacturers are able to produce their sweet foods and market them as “low calorie” so they can market and appeal to millions of people on “diets.” There is no doubt that the less sugar you have in your diet, the better. But replacing sugar with aspartame is not the solution, and in fact is likely to be even worse for your health.
In my personal experience, Aspartame has always made my head feel very odd when I consumed it. Headaches, light headedness and overall nausea, are all symptoms I personally feel from consuming Aspartame. But that isn’t even the bad part when you look at what all of the research is suggesting. So I question, and everyone should be asking the same: With all of the research about Aspartame and its dangerous effects, even in small quantities, why is it still approved by the FDA and other health agencies as being safe for human consumption?
Let’s take a look at some research.

What is this lovely substance (Aspartame) made of?

 

An Aspartame molecule is essentially made up of 3 different substances. 90% of it is made of two natural amino acids, 1 being aspartic acid and the other being phenylalanine. The other 10% of the molecule is made up of a methyl ester bond (includes Methanol). The methanol is released from the aspartame within hours of consumption and begins traveling through the body via the blood. Once the methyl ester bond is broken, is separtes into methyl alcohol and methanol (wood alcohol). The big problem with methanol is that it easily passes into your blood-brain barrier and once there, is converted into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is what is causing the brain damage. While animals are able to detoxify methanol in the body, humans do not have this capability. It doesn’t really take a rocket scientist to realize that accumulating formaldehyde in the brain is not a good thing.

What’s the deal with Methanol?

 

As mentioned above, Methanol is the key issue here as it is what converts into formaldehyde. While it is often believed that formic acid is the issue with Aspartame, it is actually formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a serious neurotoxin and carcinogen. According to the EPA, Methanol is considered a cumulative poison which means is accumulates in the body and very little is excreted each time it is consumed.
Methanol is a toxin that destroys the myelin tissue in your body, which is the insulating material around your nerves that allows nerve signals to travel properly. Once injured, one can have what are called demyelinating symptoms that are commonly seen in diseases like MS and also migraines that can include bizarre and inconsistent visual field disruptions.

But it must be safe in small doses!

 

While having NO methanol in the body makes most sense, the EPA has accepted that a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day is still OK. Why we accept even small amounts of toxic stuff in our body is beyond me, but some feel we can still consume this stuff in small doses. According to Woodrow Monte, Ph.D, R.D., director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University:
“When diet sodas and soft drinks, sweetened with aspartame, are used to replace fluid loss during exercise and physical exertion in hot climates, the intake of methanol can exceed 250 mg/day or 32 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended limit of consumption for this cumulative toxin.”
Further, he states that due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans.
“There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol,” he said.
How can you know you are getting too much Methanol? You may experience headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, and neuritis. Another very well known sign of methanol poisoning is vision problems.
Adding to the problem, one of the amino acids in aspartame, aspartic acid is capable of crossing your blood-brain barrier. There it attacks your brain cells, creating a form of cellular overstimulation called excitotoxicity, which can lead to cell death.
Your blood-brain barrier, which normally protects your brain from excess aspartate, as well as toxins, is not able to adequately protect you against the effects of aspartame consumption because it:
  • Is not fully developed during childhood
  • Does not fully protect all areas of the brain
  • Is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions
  • Allows seepage of excess aspartate into the brain even when intact
That excess aspartate slowly begins to destroy neurons, and the large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. Then, when they do occur, they may or may not be associated with aspartame consumption, even though examples of chronic illnesses that are made worse by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include: Multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, hormonal problems, memory loss, epilepsy, hearing loss, Alzheimers, dementia, brain lesions, and Neuroendocrine disorders.
It can be easy for us to make the argument that this stuff is OK in small doses, and it hasn’t killed us yet so it can’t be that bad. But it almost seems there is something more to it why we use this reasoning. Are we just addicted to these substances? Afraid to admit we have been poisoning ourselves? Unable to accept that the FDA and health agencies have lied to us? Like to brush these truths off as conspiracies? No matter what the reason is, there comes a point where we must see what is staring us in the face and start looking at how we can begin making new choices. Returning to something that is healthier and more in line with our bodies. We are really damaging ourselves here and becoming quite numb to life. It is susbstances like Aspartame and Fluoride that are causing these issues and the difference it makes to avoid these substances is monumental for our quality of life and consciousness.

Eliminate This Everyday Food and Watch Your High Blood Pressure Plunge  687,230 views |

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a very serious health concern that can lead to heart disease and increased risk for stroke. The good news is, by optimizing your dietary intake, exercising, and effectively managing your stress, the odds of normalizing your blood pressure are greatly in your favor. If you or someone you love is affected by high blood pressure, then please review and share the guidelines given below. Hypertension is actually an easily treated condition, but one that can cause serious damage to your health if ignored.

Your Diet Will Raise or Lower Your Blood Pressure

Are you on a high grain, low fat regimen? If so, I have bad news for you, because this nutritional combination is a prescription for hypertension and can absolutely devastate your health.

Groundbreaking research published in 1998 in the journal Diabetes reported that nearly two-thirds of the test subjects who were insulin resistant (IR) also had high blood pressure, and insulin resistance is directly attributable to a high sugar, high grain diet, especially if accompanied by inadequate exercise.

So, chances are that if you have hypertension, you also have poorly controlled blood sugar levels, because these two problems often go hand in hand.

As your insulin level elevates, so does your blood pressure.

As explained by Dr. Rosedale, insulin stores magnesium. If your insulin receptors are blunted and your cells grow resistant to insulin, you can't store magnesium so it passes out of your body through urination. Magnesium stored in your cells relaxes muscles. If your magnesium level is too low, your blood vessels will constrict rather than relax, which will raise your blood pressure and decrease your energy level.

Insulin also affects your blood pressure by causing your body to retain sodium. Sodium retention causes fluid retention. Fluid retention in turn causes high blood pressure and can ultimately lead to congestive heart failure.  If your hypertension is the direct result of an out-of-control blood sugar level, then normalizing your blood sugar levels will also bring your blood pressure readings into the healthy range.

Fructose Can Cause Your Blood Pressure to Skyrocket

The first thing you need to do is remove all grains and sugars from your diet, particularly fructose, until both your weight and your blood pressure have normalized. Eating sugars and grains -- including any type of bread, pasta, corn, potatoes, or rice -- will cause your insulin levels and your blood pressure to remain elevated.

 A study published earlier this year discovered that those who consumed 74 grams or more per day of fructose (the equivalent of about 2.5 sugary drinks) had a 77 percent greater risk of having blood pressure levels of 160/100 mmHg. (For comparison, a normal blood pressure reading is below 120/80 mmHg.) Consuming 74 grams or more of fructose daily also increased the risk of a 135/85 blood pressure reading by 26 percent, and 140/90 by 30 percent.

This is significant because the average American now consumes 70 grams of fructose EVERY day!

Fructose breaks down into a variety of waste products that are bad for your body, one being uric acid. Uric acid drives up your blood pressure by inhibiting the nitric oxide in your blood vessels. Nitric oxide helps your vessels maintain their elasticity, so nitric oxide suppression leads to increases in blood pressure. In fact, 17 out of 17 studies demonstrate that elevated uric acid levels lead to hypertension.  For more information on the connection between fructose, uric acid, and hypertension, please see this article that explains it in greater depth.

I've also interviewed Dr. Richard Johnson, one of the leading medical researchers in this field, about his research into the health dangers of fructose, specifically how fructose causes health problems such as high blood pressure.

My Recommended Fructose Allowance

As a standard recommendation, I strongly advise keeping your TOTAL fructose consumption below 25 grams per day. Since the average 12-ounce can of soda contains 40 grams of sugar, at least half of which is fructose, this can of soda ALONE would exceed your daily allotment.

In addition, most people would be wise to also limit the amount of fructose you get from fruit to 15 grams or less, because you're virtually guaranteed to consume "hidden" sources of fructose (typically in the form of high fructose corn syrup) from most beverages and just about any processed food you eat.

Fifteen grams of fructose is not much -- it represents two bananas, one-third cup of raisins, or just two Medjool dates. In his book, The Sugar Fix, Dr. Johnson includes detailed tables showing the fructose content in different foods, and I've included a sample of these values in the linked article.

Additional Dietary Considerations

1. Normalize your omega 6:3 ratio -- Both omega-3 and omega-6 fats are essential for your health. Most Americans, however, are getting too much omega-6 in their diet and far too little omega-3. Consuming omega-3 fats is one of the best ways to re-sensitize your insulin receptors if you suffer from insulin resistance. Omega-6 fats are found in corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oil. If you're consuming a lot of these oils, you'll want to avoid or limit them. Omega-3 fats are typically found in flaxseed oil, walnut oil and fish, with fish being by far the best source. Unfortunately, most fresh fish today contains dangerously high levels of mercury. Your best bet is to find a safe source of fish, or if this proves too difficult, supplement with a high quality krill oil, which has been found to be 48 times more potent than fish oil.

2. Eliminate caffeine -- The connection between caffeine consumption and high blood pressure is not well understood, but there is ample evidence to indicate that if you have hypertension, coffee and other caffeinated drinks and foods can ex­acerbate your condition. Caffeine is a drug, and while it's entirely legal and widely consumed, it can have a powerful affect on your individual physiology. If you want to eliminate caffeine from your diet, try to do it gradually over a period of days or even weeks in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms like headaches.

3. Consume Fermented Foods – Differences in gut flora from one person to another appears to have a large effect on whether or not you develop heart disease. If your gut flora is not healthy, your risk is much greater for heart disease, as well as many other chronic health problems. The best way to optimize your gut flora is by including some naturally fermented foods in your diet, such as sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables, yogurt, kefir, and natto. An additional benefit of fermented foods is that some of them are excellent sources of vitamin K2, which is important for preventing arterial plaque buildup and heart disease.

Use Exercise as a Drug

Physical activity is by far one of the most potent "drugs" there is, and its side effects are exactly the kinds you want to experience. Regardless of the primary reason you start an exercise program, your efforts will be rewarded in countless other ways.

A comprehensive exercise regimen, such as my Peak Fitness program, is very important in producing long-term benefits in people with high blood pressure. Nearly every program should incorporate anaerobic sprint or burst-type exercises one to three times a week, as these have been shown to be even more effective than aerobic exercises at reducing your risk of dying from a heart attack.

If you are insulin resistant, you'll definitely want to include weight training in your exercise program. When you work individual muscle groups, you increase blood flow to those muscles. Good blood flow will increase your insulin sensitivity. Depending on your physical condition when you embark on your exercise program, you may need to consult with a health care professional for help increasing to the intensity required to lower your insulin level. Exercise in combination with the supplement L-arginine has been shown to correct the abnormal functioning of blood vessels seen in people with chronic heart failure.

However, I would view this more as a drug approach and not necessarily a supplement you would consider using for optimizing health in general. L-arginine probably works through its interaction with nitric oxide. I would consider it an adjunct, not a replacement, for coenzymeQ10, which is a well-proven therapy for heart failure.

Optimize Your Vitamin D Levels

Believe it or not, the farther you live from the equator, the higher your risk of developing high blood pressure.

And did you know that blood pressure is typically higher in winter months than in summer?

Sunlight actually affects blood pressure in several ways: Sun exposure causes your body to produce vitamin D. Lack of sunlight reduces your vitamin D stores and increases parathyroid hormone production, which increases blood pressure.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to insulin resistance (IR) and Syndrome X (also known as Metabolic Syndrome), a group of health problems that can include IR, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Vitamin D is also a negative inhibitor of your body's renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which regulates blood pressure. If you're vitamin D deficient, it can cause inappropriate activation of your RAS, which may lead to hypertension.

Additionally, exposure to UV rays is thought to cause the release of endorphins, chemicals in your brain that produce feelings of euphoria and pain relief. Endorphins naturally relieve stress, and stress management is an important factor in resolving hypertension.

Exposure to appropriate amounts of sunlight is a basic health requirement that extends far beyond blood pressure normalization. Vitamin D helps systems and organs throughout your body to function properly. Ideally, you'll want to get your vitamin D through safe exposure to sunshine or a safe tanning bed, but vitamin D3 supplements can also be used. Please do NOT let your doctor give you a "prescription" vitamin D. That is vitamin D2, which is synthetic, and not nearly as beneficial as the real vitamin D, which is D3 (cholecalciferol).

Keep in mind that if you decide to supplement with oral vitamin D3, you must carefully monitor your vitamin D blood levels to avoid overdosing. (This is why it is highly preferable to get your vitamin D through sun exposure, since there is virtually no chance of overdosing.)

Controlling Your Stress is Crucial

One in three American adults have high blood pressure (hypertension), and just as many, if not more, battle emotional and mental stress on a day-to-day basis.

Are these two conditions connected?

You bet. As reported by ABC World News on September 16, 20103, one cardiologist believes the connection between stress and hypertension is undeniable, yet still does not receive the emphasis it deserves. In response, Dr. Kennedy developed a stress-relieving technique he calls "The 15 Minute Heart Cure," a set of breathing and creative visualization techniques that can be done anywhere, anytime. The technique is demonstrated in the ABC World News video above. By teaching your body to slow down and relax when stress hits -- essentially short-circuiting your physical stress reaction -- you can protect your health.

My preferred method is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), an easy to learn, easy to use technique for releasing negative emotions. EFT combines visualization with calm, relaxed breathing, while employing gentle tapping to 'reprogram' deeply seated emotional patterns.

 Supplements and Other Alternatives

Although certain supplements may be helpful, it's important to understand they should never be used as a substitute for basic lifestyle choices that treat the real cause of the problem. Using only supplements without modifying your lifestyle is an allopathic approach not very different from using drugs. In most instances, it is not likely to be effective. Once you have made some beneficial changes to your lifestyle, you can then consider some of the following supplements as a way to further enhance your health:

Calcium and magnesium. Daily calcium and magnesium supplementation can be useful in lowering blood pressure, especially if yours is on the high end of high. However, if you avoid sugars and grains and eat for your Nutritional Type™ (see above), it's unlikely additional calcium or magnesium supplements will be necessary.

Vitamins C and E. Studies indicate that these vitamins can be helpful in lowering your blood pressure. Ideally, you'll want to get the right amount of both these nutrients through diet alone. If you decide you need a supplement, make sure to take a natural (not synthetic) form of vitamin E. You can tell what you're buying by carefully reading the label.

Natural vitamin E is always listed as the 'd-' form (d-alpha-tocopherol, d-beta-tocopherol, etc.) Synthetic vitamin E is listed as 'dl-' forms.

Olive leaf extract. In one 2008 study, supplementing with 1,000 mg of olive leaf extract daily for eight weeks caused a significant dip in both blood pressure and LDL ("bad cholesterol") in people with borderline hypertension.
