It’s come to my attention that Obama may sign a particularly slimy act into law. How
this sausage moved through Congress would no doubt make for a prime
example of the problems associated with corporate lobbying power
overshadowing the interests of the common citizen. But that’s a
story for another day. Suffice it to say, we have yet another example
of the powers that be trying to hide legislation.
Food Democracy Now is reporting that an
unknown Congressperson (their staff) slipped “The Monsanto Protection
Act” into a short term budget resolution. The “rider” is found in
Section 735, of the “Continuing Resolution Spending Bill: HR 933. As Food Democracy Now reports, “the
bill would create a precedent-setting limitation on judicial review of
genetically-engineered crops, allowing them to be planted without
federal safeguards in place…”
I suspect the bill addresses two goals high on the objectives list of the GMO industry:
1) Lock
down and prevent class action lawsuits by the public after the public
has had a sufficient number of years consuming GMOs and health impacts
become better understood- imagine the tobacco industry passing similar legislation in the 1920s, just as use of cigarettes took off in the mass market;
2) Lock down and prevent the courts from meddling in the regulatory approval and management process,
adding yet another layer of influence the GMOs industry supporters
enjoy, such as the long-standing tradition of a “revolving door”
rotation between the leadership of the USDA and other regulatory agency
interests with executives straight out of GMO-focused corporations.
If you care about this issue, contact the Whitehouse immediately. It’s unlikely Obama will VETO the bill, but you can make it known that is exactly what is required to represent you. In
the very least, it is important to let the Whitehouse know a huge
percentage of the American people are against these specific corporate
interests stealing opportunity for food choice and attempting to kill
our ability to control what we put in our bodies. Many more
Americans are sick and tired of important issues like this purposely
hidden in an attempt to pass law without public debate.
Go to FoodDemocracyNow.org
and learn more, including contact info for the Whitehouse right on
their front page. Remember, always be polite and articulate with
political communications to the powers that be. Truth is, they don’t
give a rat’s arse about people that use “dirty” language or people that
can be seen as ranting. If you’re going to take the time to
communicate, you might as well do it in a way that doesn’t have your
message tossed immediately into the garbage.
