Fake Food by Dr. Norm Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

The following is from a newsletter published by Dr. Norm Shealy (http://www.normshealy.com/) about the damage that "fake food" does to our bodies.  Do not think that these are the only exposures to artificial foods.  There is also the use of wheat and wheat products containing gluten of which and estimated 80% of the population are intolerant.  The use artificial sweeteners, excitotoxins, additives and flavor enhancers not to mention widespread use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) and chemical substances designed to mimic the taste, flavor, color and texture of real natural foods.

Other foods also damage the body such as the 10 Bad Foods referred to by Dr. Peter Glidden.  (See the side panel)

FAKE FOOD
C. Norman Shealy, M.D, Ph.D.

Once upon a time, food came only from natural plants or animals. Ten thousand years ago, around the end of the last Ice Age, farming began. Then a few thousand years ago the first bastardization of food began with the extraction of sugar from sugar cane. That appears to have been the first ARTIFICIAL food. Next, about 400 years ago rice became the next artificial food when it was polished, removing most of its real nutritional value! Next came "white" flour, at least as artificial as sugar, as it not only has had all the real nutritional value taken out, it has even been BLEACHED , partially "enriched", an oxymoron indeed, for about 200 years with a few minor additions of part of the nutrients artificially reinserted. All this began before the Frankenstein genetically modified trend!

The real Mafioso prostitution attack on food revved into high gear in the 20the century, with even further pollution of wheat, with additions of plainly artificial materials similar to the plastics used in yoga mats

And of course artificial fats began to replace natural ones with the same plastics approach of "artificial hydrogenation" into trans-fats, incapable of being metabolized and major contributors to atherosclerosis. Margarine and solid vegetable SHORTENINGS (short indeed on value and long on harm) followed.  At least 99% of all commercial peanut butter is contaminated with this crap.

Monosodium Glutamate, MSG <often hidden behind other chemical names.  See below>, an addicting, brain-damaging and fattening agent became the "flavor enhancer" of choice. And eventually even more artificial, totally non-natural chemical poisons began to replace even sugar, with aspartame, Splenda®, etc and the unreal fats such as Olestra®. All guaranteed to help make you fatter!

Even "table salt" often contains such additives as sodium ferro-cyanide and aluminum, among other toxins! AND DON'T IGNORE PINK SLIME!

Add it all together and it is easy to see that about 80% of everything sold as food today is FAKE, UNREAL. ARTIFICIAL and UNHEALTHY! The food industry is a least as evil as the tobacco industry and the PharmacoMafia.

And don't forget the unbelievable stupidity of adding antibiotics to animal feed to make them fatter!

There are two ways to be fooled.
One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Glutamic acid found in unadulterated “whole food” protein does not cause adverse reactions. To cause adverse reactions, the glutamic acid must have been processed/manufactured or come from protein that has been fermented (1).

The following are ingredients suspected of containing or creating sufficient processed free glutamic acid to serve as MSG-reaction triggers in highly sensitive people (7):

> Corn starch
> Corn syrup
> Modified food starch
> Lipolyzed butter fat
> Dextrose
> Rice syrup
> Brown rice syrup
> Milk powder
> Reduced fat milk (skim; 1%; 2%)
> Most things labeled “Low Fat” or “No Fat”
> Anything labeled “Enriched”
> Anything labeled “Vitamin Enriched”
Unfortunately, many protein powders contain processed free glutamic acid.

Protein Powders: Be Selective

Unfortunately, many protein powders contain forms of soy and whey protein, as listed above, that will always contain processed free glutamic acid. Since free glutamic acids are a product of processing proteins, it can be tricky to find a protein powder that does not potentially contain them. The key is the amount or concentration of these glutamates in each product, as well as gauging your own personal level of sensitivity and ability to break them down, that becomes the issue.

Don’t Stress—Just Eat Whole Foods!

A list so long can be overwhelming, and can provoke the feeling of, “What is there left to eat?” When trying to avoid MSG, the main focus should be on a diet of whole, unprocessed foods including vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits, nuts and seeds, organic and grass-fed meats and organic dairy.
Make sure your proteins are clean, preferably organic and grass-fed and cook them at home or enjoy them at a restaurant whose practices you support, rather than eating excess processed foods.
After looking at the above list a few times, you’ll get the hang of which kind of ingredient names connote MSG and easily avoid them.

As Jack Lalanne advised, “Don’t eat anything with a wrapper!” And if you can’t do that, try to avoid processed foods with more than five whole-food ingredients.

Alliance for Natural Heal Reveals Global Conspiracy

ANH Feature: The ’12-step’ programme to diminishing natural healthcare – worldwide

KEY POINTS
  1. The European Union (EU) has developed a complex web of laws that attempt to restrict natural healthcare
  2. Twelve distinct steps can be identified as characteristic of the programme
  3. These steps are being introduced elsewhere in the world
  4. Three further levels of legislation play a vital role in the natural health crackdown: Codex Alimentarius, regulatory cooperation and convergence, and international trade agreements

We’ve all heard of the 12-step programmes used to help people conquer their addictions. But did you know that a far more sinister 12-step programme exists, one that regulators worldwide are using in an attempt to eliminate not addictions – but natural forms of healthcare? In this article, we expose this pro-big business agenda that is fostered by the world’s elite, and introduce you to the three broad ‘levels’ of legal instrumental firepower that are being trained on many forms of non-mainstream medicine.

EU on the regulation rostrum

As far as regulation of natural healthcare goes, the European Union (EU) is way out in front. To use a topical Olympic analogy, it’s standing on the podium, grinning smugly and brandishing its gold medal to the crowds while forgetting the words to the national anthem.
Why do we say this? In short, the interlocking pieces of legislation brought in by the EU in recent decades – the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD), the EU Medicines Code/Human Medicinal Products Directive, the Food Supplements Directive (FSD), the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR) and the Novel Foods Regulation (NFR) – pose an enormous and concerted threat to many of the longest-standing and most effective forms of natural healthcare, used by millions of people in the EU and worldwide.
Worse than that, the justification for all these laws – covering the safest group of products consumed by human beings – is ensuring consumer safety, while also facilitating trade. This is the infamous double-edge sword of global trade, one that seems destined to work against the majority of citizens worldwide, while benefiting the biggest corporations and most powerful governments on the planet.
There’s no doubt, this complex of EU laws is bad, to put it mildly, for EU citizens. Unfortunately, citizens living in countries many thousands of miles from the EU are by no means immune from the kind of thinking that has imposed such draconian bureaucracy on Europe. Thank globalisation for that, and its one-size-fits-all, big business-friendly model so beloved of governments and elites worldwide.

12 steps (but not to heaven)

The existing EU regulatory system consists of 12 key features (Table 1), which together aim to place unbreakable shackles around the entire natural healthcare sector. Close examination of the emerging regulatory systems of the USA and Canada – two countries widely considered far more freedom-loving than the EU – reveals precisely the same features, either already in place or coming into clearer focus all the time.

Table 1. Key features of the EU’s regulatory regime for natural products and comparison with the regulatory regimes of Canada and the USA.
A quick glance at the table immediately shows that Canada is already on an identical track to the EU.  And – surprisingly – the USA is already nearly two-thirds of the way down the same road.
This raises important questions: how did we get here, and what’s likely to happen next? And what can we do to change things?

Bypassing democracy

Noted Constitutional lawyer, Jonathan Emord, has often highlighted the US government’s neat sidestepping of the very democratic process on which the nation was founded some 200 years ago: “Around 75% of US laws,” says Emord, “now bypass Congress and the democratic process, having been delegated to a swathe of Federal Agencies, among them the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).” The same process of handing unparalleled powers to the bureaucracy has been necessary to get to the same position in the EU and Canada. This problem was overcome by the EU’s very creation, since EU membership requires countries to hand their sovereign powers to the Brussels bureaucrats. Since this process is fundamentally undemocratic, t he EU is an ideal ‘proving ground’ for regulatory schemes that would be rejected by the people if put to a vote.
Of course, spreading the doctrine worldwide is another matter, which brings us back to the three levels of legislation we mentioned earlier.

Level 1: Codex Alimentarius

Many people have heard of Codex Alimentarius, but few are aware that it is, “An inter-governmental body that sets guidelines and standards to ensure ‘fair trade practices’ and consumer protection in relation to the global trade of food. Remember the double-edged sword we mentioned earlier? Although Codex is woefully misunderstood by the general public and many in the natural health movement alike, it represents an enormous threat to natural healthcare, for numerous reasons.
Codex is also – by design – very difficult to influence by any normal democratic process, as decisions are made by consensus among government officials present at meetings. And, when it comes to the representatives of those countries among the 170+ Codex members that consider themselves democratic, would you be at all surprised to learn that none are elected representatives of governments? They are all unelected bureaucrats, working almost entirely to a pre-agreed agenda.
These bureaucrats that populate the many Codex committees, covering every aspect of the human food supply, are heavily influenced by so-called international non-governmental organisations, or INGOs. INGOs overwhelmingly represent transnational corporations. As a result, potentially harmful substances like genetically modified foods, contaminants, additives and pesticide residues get an easy ride compared with beneficial substances like vitamins and minerals. Beneficial health claims for food constituents that might overlap with the intended functions of licensed drugs are also on the Codex ‘black list’.
In addition, the industrialised Western countries tend to have the most influence at Codex, especially when it comes to the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses, a committee we have monitored for years; the USA and the EU, working very closely with the German secretariat, exert by far the greatest influence, often supported by Australia. The US representatives are primarily comprised of Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) representatives, while those for the EU come directly from the European Commission’s Health and Consumers Directorate-General (SANCO). Over recent years, we have observed EU polices on organic food, food supplements and health claims being incorporated into Codex guidelines and then being increasingly applied in other Codex member countries, such as the USA and Canada. Even the desperately inadequate safety testing for genetically modified (GM) crops saw first light in Codex’s Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology, which was disbanded in 2004 after it had done the job it set out to do.

Codex and health claims

And, while Codex guidelines are voluntary on the surface, giving regulators and governments a convenient cover when questioned they are legally binding in the case of trade disputes. Trade disputes are adjudicated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and are typically rigged enormously in the favour of the industrialised, Western countries that both developed and hold the balance of power at Codex Alimentarius.
Regulation of the health claims made on foods, food ingredients and dietary supplements has been a goal of Codex Alimentarius since at least 1997. Since then, the highly controversial Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR) has been enacted in the EU – with parallel regulations in Canada, as we saw earlier – and similar moves are afoot in the USA. Under the NHCR, all health claims not approved by EFSA will be banned from the end of 2012, leaving the EU with a measly 222 health claims on 70 foods and food ingredients. In future, we are likely to see similar, Codex-mandated health claims regimes being pushed all over the world. It will be very interesting to see the reaction of countries like India and China, where traditional systems of medicine are deeply embedded in the culture, to regulations that see them unable to make claims about the health benefits of those traditions' Materia Medica.

Level 2: Regulatory cooperation and convergence

This process has been starkly obvious for some time now, particularly at Codex meetings where the European Commission and the FDA have been working ever closer. On July 2, 2007, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the controversial European authority from which the EC takes all its advice on food safety issues, and the FDA signed an agreement that formalised their closer collaboration.
The Trilateral Cooperation Charter (TCC), signed in 2004, signalled a push by regulators in the USA, Mexico and Canada to crack down on “drugs, biologics, medical devices, food safety, and nutrition.” It uses a bizarre definition of 'health fraud' to legitimise attacks on anything that competes with the pharmaceutical industry. Having received a lot of negative exposure after its initial crackdowns, including from International Advocate for Health Freedom, the Dr Rath Foundation, the National Health Federation, our colleagues at ANH-USA and others, it seems the international harmonisation agenda has been less visible under the TCC banner, while continuing unabated elsewhere.
In Australia and New Zealand, a 'trans-Tasman' regulatory agency, the Australia New Zealand Therapeutic Products Agency (ANZTPA), will soon come into existence. In addition, talk of a health claims regime in both countries has started up at the outset of a process that will see New Zealand's presently liberal regulatory system brought into the far more restrictive Australian mould.
We can expect to see this process accelerate and spread in the coming years.

Level 3: international free trade agreements

Free trade agreements (FTAs) remove barriers to trade between countries – or, as is increasingly the case, trading blocs formed of multiple countries. In terms of Gross Domestic Product, measured by Pricing Power Parity (PPP), North America – including Canada – and the EU represent the two richest trading entities on earth.

Figure 1. International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates of GDP/PPP in 2007 (Source; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GDP_PPP_per_capita_2009_IMF.png)
Keeping it as simple as possible, the easiest way for FTAs to remove trade barriers is to harmonise regulations in the different countries/blocs involved. In the case of natural healthcare, FTAs create yet further pressure upon countries to reorganise themselves along the EU model – and, once the larger players are aligned in this way, pressure on smaller countries to follow suit becomes immense.  Inevitably, it means harmonising down, rather than up, to the lowest common denominator.  This suits the kinds of non-therapeutic, ‘natural’ products – often including synthetic ingredients and unpleasant or toxic tagalong excipients in formulations – produced by drug companies and sold in pharmacies and supermarkets.
Some of the most important trade agreements are:
There are many more FTAs in operation and pending worldwide. And, while participating governments hail them as essential for jobs, growth and development, they cause little but misery to many, if not most, citizens.

Conclusion

So, there you have it: the 12 steps and three levels of legal firepower that threaten natural healthcare worldwide. However, as an individual, you can always make a difference, as our Call to action below shows!

Call to action

  1. Send this story viral using every form of media available to you – email to all your contacts, post to your Facebook page, get Tweeting and utilise any other social media you’re familiar with! Knowledge is power, as they say, and without understanding the opposition, we won’t change anything
  2. Get involved whenever governments open up policy proposals for public consultation. Natural product suppliers in particular should make their voice heard in order to help shape policy in their favour, and citizens should never waste an appropriate opportunity
  3. Contact your elected representatives and express your concern over unelected bureaucrats making the decisions at international decision-making forums like Codex Alimentarius. Without an electoral mandate, these bureaucrats have no impetus to consider the electorate’s opinions on the matter. Ask your representative if he or she will take your concerns to the government

Its ALL about the $$.
Its so easy to grow Herbs & vegetables - even in an apartment with a balcony/terrace. If we all did this and ate more vegetables & fruits, and supported genuine suppliers of organic chicken, fish & meats, then we would see a VERY DIRECT effect that ANH speaks of here. And its enjoyable to grow plants and the children benefit not only in better health but also in their involvement in the home and learning - gets them away from the computer too. And chickens/fowl if one has land at the back of their home, it is one way of recycling left overs. - caring for animals and eating very healthy foods.
Eating healthier means much improved health and therefore enjoyment of life and lower household costs. Farmers would be delighted to sell you their cows manure, any animals manure is far better than chemically processed ones.
But we had best buy our seeds before the EU enacts legislation in those areas - being discussed!! or before the GMO spreads further - and also make sure you buy seeds that can self seed- not the genetically tweaked seeds that don't, so that the Monsanto's of this world can make their $$$$$ to further ruin peoples health and farmers livelihoods'.
Dear Anonymous
Thank you for your comment although we're not sure where you get the "attempt to cripple small business" phrase in this article as it does not appear. Are you referring to a different article. Secondly, we don't see anything childish in bringing to public attention the general trend for regulation of natural products generally having a disproportionate effect on small businesses, resulting in more and more of them struggling to stay afloat. In layperson's terms this process could surely be referred to as crippling small businesses and we struggle to see where or how you find it either adolescent or immature.
You guys might be a bit more convincing if your bias wasn't so overwhelming. For example - "Attempt to cripple small business" is probably not the wording of the legislation in question.
Makes y'all look a bit, well, immature. Present the same case in less rabid fashion and you might get more people onside. The current adolescent style and tone doesn't help your cause at all.
It's crazy ! How many companies can destroy the health of people with the autorization of the governement?
How many industry destroy the nature ?
How many medications our elderly takes a day and how many peoples are victimes of medications ?
How many people healed themselves without medication or doctor because they search and found the true ?
How long our children will live with all the pollution, vaccin, raffine food, chemical in water, chemtrails and else ?
How long our children will be able to have children without birth defect with all the pesticides, OGM and else ? How many children have birth defect and how does it increase since 15 years ?
Can we take care of our health in peace ?
In our country which is Jordan a small and not rich country in the middle east. You are not allowed to manufacture herbal medicines if you are not a drug manufacturing company
Hi ANH team,
I am glad you are getting this message out there and help more of us consumers to understand what is happening to our rights.
What bothers me is that I feel helpless to do something about changes and restrictions that are being established in secret. the first time most people will find out this is going on is when they can't by a herb they have been using to manage a health condition for years and years.
Could you arrange more petitions where we can actively make our opinion heard?
I often get involved in important political issues through AVAAZ.
They now have the option to set up petitions. I think we could reach more people that way.
http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/?hp
I hope we can turn this restrictive change round if we all pull together.
Many thanks
Marie
Hi Marie
Thanks for your comment, and for your kind words.
We have mixed feelings about petitions. While they can be an excellent way of raising awareness on particular issues, they are very easy to ignore – and they can make people feel as though all they need to do to change the world is sign a petition every now and again! That said, we regularly provide links to valuable petitions on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
You are probably aware that much of our work is performed at a European level, for the simple reason that the European Union (EU) is responsible for the laws restricting natural healthcare in Europe. EU politicians aren’t obliged to take any notice of petitions, apart from one specific type, the European Citizens’ Initiative (http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/welcome). The European Commission has made it as difficult as possible to enact change via this route (http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/how-it-works), and we doubt that it is going to make significant changes in key policy areas on the back of one of these petitions. However, it’s certainly something to bear in mind for the future.
As for Avaaz, we did get involved with them on a petition about the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) in 2011 (http://www.anh-europe.org/news/eu-herb-ban-technically-starts-today). Ironically enough, the idea was to get 1 million signatures under the terms of the Citizens’ Initiative, which was achieved – only for the European Commission to change the rules by announcing that it could not consider Citizens’ Initiatives before 1st April 2012!
On a political level, we feel strongly that the individual holds far more power than is widely acknowledged, especially by the ‘powers that be’. Individual actions, if replicated on a wide enough scale, can change the world: just look at what’s happened in the EU as a result of consumers boycotting genetically modified foods, for example – although we must be vigilant once more (http://www.anh-europe.org/news/anh-feature-european-commission-ups-effor...) – or imagine what would happen to the supermarkets if enough people opted for an organic lifestyle. That’s why we provide a ‘Call to action’ at the foot of all our articles, as ideas for small-scale actions that could have a large-scale effect.

Obesity - Low Carb High Fat Diet

One of the greatest and most underrated methods of losing weight is by using a Low Carbohydrate High Fat (LCHF) diet.  It turns out that when we eat carbohydrates which includes breads, pasta, potatoes, sugar, vegetables and all the other foods that we are told daily are good for us it actually teaches our bodies to burn sugar in stead of body fat.  Unfortunately, when we eat carbohydrates the body must use insulin in order to metabolize the carbs.  The excess is stored as body fat.  Guess what is the number one fat storage hormone?  Insulin.

Could this be why obesity has reached epic proportions and insulin resistance has exploded through the roof?  When you eat carbohydrates the liver and the pancreas secret insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that controls how carbohydrates such as sugar is used by the cells of the body.  If for any reason the cell membrane has become dysfunctional or unable to receive the insulin sugar will be left in the blood system where it will damage tissue.  The body uses any means necessary to preserve life and produces more insulin in an attempt to metabolize the excessive sugar.  More insulin is produced more carbohydrates are stored as body and the cycle is repeated.

After a while the person becomes insulin resistant, meaning the body stops responding to insulin.  More sugar floats in the blood only producing more insulin.  The conventional medical method of dealing with this "metabolic syndrome" is to give the patient...insulin.  But insulin is also a growth and storage hormone.  The cycle is accelerated as the physician attempts to save your life my reducing sugar in the blood system.  This approach shortens lives, leads to obesity, cancer and many other diseases all in the name of trying to save your life.

When the body has what it perceives to be an excess of carbohydrates (sugar) the body secrets insulin instructing the body to store the excess energy as body fat.  In other words when insulin is present a portion of the carbohydrate intake goes directly to fat leaving the person still hungry for nutrition.  Over time the person consumes more and more carbohydrates producing more and more insulin.  getting bigger and bigger.  Insulin also leads to hunger therefore more eating which causes more insulin leading to more storage as body fat.

This method is used to fatten animals before slaughter.  During the growth phase animals are fed protein, vitamins and minerals.  Prior to slaughter they are fattened up by feeding them carbohydrates especially grains.  There is however one food that does not cause insulin to increase, fat.  By eating fat the body is instructed to burn fat for fuel instead of sugar.  As a result the person becomes thinner.  Insulin resistance is mitigated.  Heart disease is reversed.  Muscles become lean.

It turns out that everything we have been told on a daily basis about healthy eating is false.  Low fat diets, cholesterol reducing diets, low salt diets and staying out of the Sun are examples of misleading health information.  Exercising to lose weight and that obesity is genetic are other examples of misleading information.  You need fat in your diet.  You need cholesterol in your diet.  You need salt in your diet.  You need Sun in your life to be healthy.

What is the cause of obesity?  The cause of obesity has its roots in a lack of vitamins and minerals.  The lack of vitamins and minerals in foods leads to deficiencies.  The brain compels the person to consume more foods in an attempt to obtain the necessary nutrition.  Sadly for us most of the foods being offered are devoid of nutrition because they are processed and full of anti-life additives which may be good for sales but are bad for health.  And most so called foods are full of carbohydrates further causing us to eat more in a never ending search for nutrition.

The conventional medical model refuses to acknowledge the role that nutrition plays in health.  Instead, at the end of every diagnosis is drug therapy or surgery.  We on the other hand have a holistic approach to health which sees the body not as a collection of parts but as one divinely created organism with all systems being interconnected.

Watch the ads on TV, the Internet and in newspapers.  Are they offering protein and fats which build the body and reduces body fat or are they offering carbohydrates like breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, cookies and snacks that are carbohydrate based?  And when you do decide to eat healthy are those foods being suggested proteins and fats or carbohydrates (vegetables are carbohydrates as well) and sugar?  Do you see promotions saying low fat, low salt, low cholesterol?  Or do they acknowledge the interconnectedness of the body and the importance of fats and proteins in the diet.

If you were a food manufacturer and wanted to make people consume more of your products you would offer carbohydrates which can easily be manufactured.  You would use sugar to make your nutritionless foods seem more desirable.  This is what has happened and the mythical healthy way to eat only sends the unsuspecting consumer back to fast food restaurant, lunch buffets or grocery stores in search of nutrition that is not there.

Our recommendation is that we should be eating a LCHF diet (ketogenic diet) consisting of approximately 75% fat, 15% protein and 10% carbohydrates.  The results are spectacular using this strategy.  The typical Western diet at this time is made up of 35% fat, 15%protein, and 50% carbohydrates.  We see what that strategy has done for us; more obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.  Here is what the famous Mayo Clinic has to say about the benefits of carbohydrates in the diet: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/carbohydrates/art-20045705

Wheat Is Bad For You

This article was published by "DietDoctor.com" (http://www.dietdoctor.com/new-study-todays-wheat-bad)

New Study: Is Today’s Wheat Bad for You?

dangerous_wheat
Today’s wheat is not the same wheat that your grandmother ate when she was young. Not even close.
Today’s wheat is greatly genetically modified to grow faster and provide a higher yield of wheat per acre. More food to the starving poor was a blessing, but could there be disadvantages with the modern super wheat?
Could it be bad for our health? Could it, for example, lead to severe digestive issues for many people?
Cardiologist William Davis argued this in his best selling book Wheat Belly. Davis got criticized for exaggerating the scientific support for his theories – which he did. But a lack of good evidence doesn’t mean that a theory must be incorrect.
A new high quality study, published in British Journal of Nutrition, tests one of Dr. Davis’ speculations, with dramatic results.
Afifah’s blog: New Study Vindicates William Davis: Modern Wheat is more Toxic than Ancient Varieties

The Study

In the study, twenty participants with common digestive issues (IBS) were put on two different diets for six weeks each:
  1. Modern wheat products (for example wheat bread)
  2. Identical products but made from an ancient variety of wheat, that hasn’t undergone modern plant breeding.
The participants didn’t know which one of the diets they were put on, and the order in which they were assigned to a diet was randomized. Not even the researchers themselves knew which person ate which diet during the period (a double-blind study). Thus, this is a high quality study, a randomized, double-blind crossover trial, where potential differences should be caused by wheat itself, and not be caused by imagination or expectations.
The difference was clear-cut. When participants with digestive issues consumed modern wheat they felt like they usually did, they suffered from their usual digestive issues. But when for six weeks they ate the ancient wheat their symptoms improved with significantly less abdominal pain, less abdominal bloating and an improved quality of life.
The improvements were so great that they could hardly be a coincidence. In addition, reduced levels of inflammatory substances in the blood were recorded in people who avoided modern wheat.
In conclusion Dr. Davis seems to be right at on least one point. Modern wheat seems to be pure poison for people with common digestive issues. It could also – perhaps – be a problem for people with inflammatory diseases (arthritis, asthma, eczema).
Have you noticed any difference from avoiding wheat?

PS

Can you get ancient wheat today? No, at least not in grocery stores. If you know where to get some, please leave a comment.
Dr. Davis has also commented on the study: Should you eat kamut?

Probiotics May Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer

Research suggests a diet rich in probiotics discourages colon cancer

(NaturalNews) Good news: If you're a fan of probiotics, another health benefit has been added to the ranks, this time concerning lowered colorectal cancer (CRC) risk.  A known immune booster, probiotics also hinder harmful pathogens in the gut that can lead to cellular mutations.  Not only that, certain species of beneficial bacteria form conjugated linoleic acid in the colon, which may inhibit the development of cancer through anti-inflammatory action.

Keeping the colon healthy and disease-free

According to Cancer Active, Professor Ian Rowland at the University of Ulster, a leading expert on diet and cancer prevention, notes:

"Studies using cultures of human colon cells grown in flasks show that probiotics can interfere with the action of cancer forming substances.  When probiotics have been given to laboratory rats, they have decreased the level of gene damage (an important event in cancer) and reduced the numbers of tumours induced in the colon. There are only a few studies in humans because of the difficulties in studying the effects of diet on human cancer.  However, in the few studies that have been done, probiotics - sometimes in combination with prebiotics - have shown effects suggesting that they may reduce the risk of colon cancer."

At a molecular level, researchers believe probiotics help discourage colon cancer by:

  • Stimulating the immune system
  • Producing beneficial short-chain fatty acids
  • Hindering enzymatic activities linked with carcinogens
  • Activating beneficial anti-carcinogenic enzymes
  • Encouraging higher levels of butyric acid in the colon (an important growth regulator for colon cells)

Probiotics also bind to bile salts.  Epidemiological studies have found a strong connection between CRC risk and diets that are high in certain types of fat, such as corn oil, safflower oil, lard or beef tallow.

Researchers believe this is due to increased level of bile acids, which are necessary to digest fat.  When the bile is broken down in the colon, the byproducts have a cytotoxic effect on colon cells, triggering proliferation and the possibility of cancer.  Probiotics help protect against this hazard in the following manner: modulation of enzymes that create harmful wastes and also by reducing the toxicity of bile salts through a binding effect.

Moreover, two types of probiotics, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bififobacterium lactis, demonstrate antibacterial characteristics by producing lactic acid and corresponding short-chain fatty acids.  When lactic acid is present, the gut environment becomes more acidic, which inhibits potentially carcinogenic bacteria.  To encourage the growth of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the gut, make sure you are getting enough soluble fiber (examples include oats (gluten), apples, barley (gluten), flaxseed and Brussels sprouts), and consider supplementing with a prebiotic like inulin, oligofructose, fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or galactooligosaccharides (GOS).

Professor Rowland concludes:

"There is a lot of evidence from studies on cell cultures and in animals that probiotics, prebiotics and combinations of the two can exert anticancer effects.  Until recently, there has been little work conducted in humans.  However a paper soon to be published reports a study conducted as part of the European Union funded SYNCAN Project.  In this experiment volunteers were fed a mixture of pro and prebiotics, or placebo, for eight weeks and a wide range of indicators of colon cancer risk were measured. Those subjects on the pro/prebiotics had less DNA damage and a lower rate of cell proliferation in biopsies taken from their colons. Additionally pro/prebiotic feeding resulted in improvements in certain characteristics of stool samples that may be indicative of reduced cancer risk."

Reductio ad Absurdum

Again, take the nervous child.  It has wild dreams, twitching, restless sleep, nervous excitement, hysterical manifestations, but if we examine all the organs of the body we will find nothing the matter with them.

This sickness, however, which is present, if allowed to go on uncured, will in twenty or
thirty years result in tissue change ; the organs will become affected and then it will be
said that the body is diseased ; but the individual has been sick from the beginning.  It is a question whether we will start out and consider the results of disease or begin at the
beginning with the causes.

If we have material ideas of disease we will have material ideas of the means of cure.  If we believe an organ is sick and alone constitutes the disease, we must feel that if we could remove the organ we would cure the patient.

A man has a necrotic condition of the hand ; then if we believe that only the hand is sick
we would think we had cured the patient by removing his hand.

Say the hand is cancerous.  According to this idea it is cancerous in itself and from itself, and seeing he would later die from the cancer of his hand we would conscientiously remove the hand and so cure the patient.

For an eruption on the skin we would use local means to stimulate the functions of the
skin and make it heal, and believing the eruption had no cause behind it we would
conscientiously think we had cured the patient. But this is the reductio ad absurdum, for nothing exists without a cause.  The organs are not the man.

Do You Have The Bad Health Gene

America and the rest of the world are reaching a critical point of no return.  Doctors and scientist assure us that the foods we eat are safe.  At the same time incidences of chronic and degenerative diseases continue to climb.  How can both be true?  The food is safe to eat but our health continues to deteriorate.  The latest explanation is that its “genetic”.

Oh Really? When taking a closer look at the “bad” gene theory there are obvious flaws.  We in the African American community we must start to question convenient explanations if we are to survive the onslaught of chronic illnesses that decimate our numbers.  Simply accepting the “bad” gene explanation may be useful when justifying socio economic conditions.  But in matters of health and the human body it becomes clear that a simple bad gene, the gene that darkens our skin, curls our hair and browns our eyes could explain why these dominant characteristics are also the same attributes that make us more prone to illness.

Rather than being scientifically based the idea that your genes can make you sick plays more to our guilt for being “black” than to the facts of genetics.  According to Dr. Joel Wallach, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and all of the other chronic conditions are not genetic.  Wallach says that what determines our healthfulness is nutrition and our ability to absorb it.

There is no escaping the sad truth about health in America and in particular about the health of the African American community.  The statistics are startling.  Here are just a few statistics from: the Center for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society.

  • Population: 39.9 Million (2011)
  • Percentage of Low Birth Weight: 12.8%
  • 80% of African Americans are gluten intolerant.  Unfortunately, gluten is in every thing from ice cream to gravies and sauces.  They even put it in yogurt.  All products containing wheat, barley, rye and oats contain gluten.  This means that our digestive tracts are destroyed and we can not absorb nutrition.
  • In 1998 in the United States, more than twice as many African American newborn babies died (13.9 of every 100,000) as white newborns (6 out of every 100,000).
  • In 1998, this sudden infant death syndrome took the lives of more than twice the number of African American infants (140 out of every 100,000) as white infants (66.4 out of every 100,000)
  • In 1998, coronary heart disease killed 136.3 out of 100,000 African Americans while killing 95.1 per 100,000 whites
  • African American men are at least 50% more likely to develop lung cancer than white men.
  • African American men also die more often from cancer of the lung and bronchus (100.8 per 100,000) than do white men (70.1 per 100,000)
  • African Americans have a rate of diabetes of 33.0 per 100,000 compared to a rate of 23.2 in whites.
  • 63,500 African Americans will die from cancer next year.
  • Approximately eleven percent of all African Americans have diabetes.
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among African American women, exceeded only by lung cancer.
  • African American men have far higher death rates from prostate cancer than any other racial or ethnic group.
  • 130,800 new African American cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2009.
  • African Americans with cancer have a shorter survival than whites in all stages of diagnoses.
  • Black people with diabetes experience kidney failure about four times more often than diabetic white Americans.
  • In 2008, diabetes was the leading cause of blindness among African American men and women
  • The death rate for Black Americans with diabetes is 40% higher than other races and cultures.
  • 80% of all Black people over the age of 45 have high blood pressure
  • Compared with any other group, African American women are more likely to get heart disease and die from complications
  • Black men and other minorities are more likely to be diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis than white men
  • African Americans have twice as many strokes as white Americans.
  • Inner city alterative health practitioners and the CDC claim African Americans have three times as much high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
  • One in every 250 African American women has Lupus.
  • 60% of minorities are overweight.
  • 80% of African American women over the age of 50 are obese.

It is hard to believe that genes cause us to have all of these problems.  After living for thousands of years in Africa with little or no problems now it’s the genes?  That is not plausible.  There have been numerous studies of African’s health.  One such study in Nigeria found not one case of high blood pressure in hundreds of people who participated.

The gene explanation might sound good but it does not explain the phenomena.  Dr. Wallach and others say it is our nutrition or lack thereof that’s the problem.  When a person eats food devoid of the 91 essential nutrients required daily to be healthy all sorts of chronic and degenerative diseases will appear.  In addition, many of the foods we eat corrupt the body’s ability to absorb what little nutrition is in our foods such as gluten.

The final nail in our coffins is our dependence on prescribed drugs, surgeries and medical procedures which are dangerous and ineffective at best.  The leading cause of death in America is doctor directed medical care.  Yet we African American put ourselves in the hands of the M.D.’s  willingly and follow his directions to a “T”.

What’s more interesting is that there has never been a professional athlete who has lived to be over one hundred other than some of the players from the old Negro League in baseball.  It turns out that the longest lived persons in the world come from the poorest countries where they have no medical care, no drugs, no doctors, no 911 and no access to a hospital.  But what they do have are the 91 essential elements in the soils where they grow their vegetables.  Yet in America where we as a nation spend more than all other countries combined on health care we are last in terms of health and longevity among the industrialized countries.

When the body absorbs the 91 essential nutrients in the correct forms and amounts health is restored and chronic diseases reverse themselves.  The body heals itself.  Relying on food to provide those nutrients is a fools game.  Today’s foods contain low amounts of nutrition if any at all.

One of the biggest challenges facing the African American community is our reliance on the established medical system to “take care of us”.  The truth of the matter is that drugs and surgeries can not help us.  They do not heal us.  Getting more access to drugs and the medical system is to fail to see the pink elephant in the room.  We do not need access to more drugs and doctors.  We need more nutrition.  We do not need more exercise.  We need less additives in the food.

To be healthy one must avoid those foods that are inflammatory and foul up the nutrition absorbing system in the digestive tract.  We can do this by:

Stop eating wheat, barley, rye and oat products in foods such as pasta, pancakes, bread, cereals, bagels, donuts etc.
Never eat fried foods
Never use cooking oils including: corn oil, canola, rapeseed oil, peanut oil, coconut oil, olive oil or any other oil in a bottle
Never drink any carbonated drink before, during or after a meal.  Found in carbonated water, soda pop, beer, various drinks
No burned fats such as in barbeque
No Nitrates and Nitrites - Processed Meats, sandwich meats, sausages, bacon
Eat medium rare meat not well done meat
No Skins of potatoes
No Corn Syrup / High Fructose Corn syrup
No Artificial Sweeteners and Additives
Use butter
Drink whole milk
Use cream
Use salt to tase
Use lard or rendered animal fat
Eat lots of eggs

Do supplement the body with the 91 essential nutrients in the correct forms and amounts which includes:

Vitamins
Minerals
Amino Acids
Trace Elements and Co-factors
Protein
Essential Fatty Acids

And correct digestive problems.

These simple steps will allow you to be at a normal weight and recover from chronic conditions.

Chronic and degenerative diseases are caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  They are not genetic.  Conditions like: Obesity, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, Cancer, Skin Conditions, Depression, ADHD, Alzheimers, Heart Disease, Kidney Failure, etc.  Avoid the bad things and supplement with the good and live long and prosper.
